Evelyn Gay Johnson

Evelyn Gay Johnson, 86, passed away peacefully Tuesday, March 16, 2010 surrounded by her loving family. She was born July 5, 1923 in Edgecombe County, daughter of the late Sallie Harper Gay and Jesse Gay. She was preceded in death by a brother, James Gay. Mrs. Johnson was a caring homemaker and dedicated her life in caring for her family. She was very active in the PTA and often worked as a teacher's assistant in the public schools. Mrs. Johnson was a member of The Degree of Pocahontas, a patriotic organization, where she held several leadership positions. She was a wonderful cook and enjoyed preparing meals for her friends and especially shut-ins in the community. She was often seen visiting residents in area nursing homes. Mrs. Johnson was a member of Southside Baptist Church where she worked with the Sunday School program. Evelyn is survived by her husband, Charles M. Johnson of 69 years. She is also survived by two daughters, Jean Griffin and husband Ray and Trudy Collier and husband Jerry; two grandchildren, Teri Stroud and Crystal Collier; two great-grandchildren, Brittany Stroud and Dylan Stroud; and one great-great-grandchild, Gracie Skinner. The family will receive friends and relatives from 7-8:30 pm Wednesday, March 17, 2010 at Wheeler and Woodlief Funeral Home. A funeral service to remember Evelyn will be held at 2:00 pm Thursday, March 18, 2010 in the funeral home chapel with Rev. David Benson and Dr. Michael Clark officiating. Burial will follow at Pineview Cemetery. The family wishes to thank Autumn Care for the love and support given to Mrs. Johnson for the past two years. Also special thanks to the staff of the ICCU unit on the third floor at Nash General Hospital for the care and compassion shown to Mrs. Johnson during her stay.   1. What a blessing Mrs. Evelyn was to both mother and me during her stay at Autumn Care. It was always a joy to be around a true lady in every sense of the word. I will miss her sweet smile and spirit and mother was extra blessed to have such a great neighbor. I will always remember her with great love and affection and so glad we got to share some time with her and all of you. My love and prayers.
