Virgil Dean "Butch" Joyner

July 26, 1956 ~ February 9, 2024

BATTLEBORO – Virgil Dean "Butch" Joyner, age 67, passed away on Friday, February 9, 2024. Born in Edgecombe County, NC on July 24, 1956, he was the son of the late Cecil Durwood Joyner. Butch began his career with Abbott Laboratories until his retirement from Pfizer Pharmaceuticals as an engineer after over 20 years. Throughout his life he was a car enthusiast and an avid collector of antiques, firearms, and classic signs, just to name a few. He also enjoyed the challenge of fixing anything that required fixing and was a knowledgeable “DIY’er” (do it yourself). Butch had a strong sense of patriotism and would always express his gratitude to members of the military and law enforcement. A dedicated and devoted father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle, and good friend to many, Butch will forever be missed and never forgotten. Butch is survived by his daughters, McCauley Pearson (Samuel) and Kelly Lancaster (William); his grandsons, Chase and Harrison Lancaster; his mother, Dorothy Marie Adkins Joyner; his sisters, Angela Barnes (Bo) and Kim Eason (Rodney); his brother, Randy Joyner (Jennifer); and many nieces and nephews. A Special Gathering of Family and Friends to celebrate Butch’s life will be held on Saturday, February 17, 2024, from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM at Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 1130 N. Winstead Ave., Rocky Mount, NC 27804. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Butch’s name to either Tunnel to Towers Foundation, 2361 Hylan Boulevard, Staten Island, NY 10306, or to the Nash County Sheriff’s Department, P.O.   2. Sorry to see he has past. He loved his music as I remember. Lived his life like “rolling stone” and like one of his heroes frankie, “he did it his way “. Craig joyner, old high school friend.

  3. Butch and I went to Roanoke VA. to pick up his motorcycle, we were rounding a curve near a military base and came face to face with a Cobra helicopter flying about 30 ft off the ground, approx. 50 ft in front of us. It just hovering looking at us, surprised the heck out of us.
