Richard Standish Brackett

ROCKY MOUNT - Richard Standish Brackett, called Pete by those that knew him, departed this mortal life after 88 years on 1 December 2020 at his home in Rocky Mount, North Carolina with his wife of 62 years at his side. Pete was born in Rockland, Maine the 7th of 9 siblings of Margerite Viola Lowe and Percy Walker Brackett and was the first to graduate from Rockland high school. He enlisted in the Navy with his friend Bud Hollowell to see the world. Pete was set to be an engineering aide in the Sea Bees but chose to become a boatswain's mate to serve their first duty station with Bud in the friends' program. He would spin a yarn about his visits to Antarctica, Japan, Korea, Philippines, Taiwan, China, Hawaii, Nova Scotia, Iceland, Greenland, Norway, and the Arctic Circle. Of all the places his favorite was Japan. He retired from active duty after 30 years in 1984 working at SIMA San Diego for his twilight tour after serving as the Command Master Chief aboard the USS Albert David FF-1040. After retiring, he accepted a final assignment request to serve as the boatswain Piping his son "over-the-sides" during a retirement ceremony. Pete is survived by his wife, Akiyo; brother, Gerald "Buzzy" Brackett and wife, Nellie; son, Charles and wife Janie; grandchildren, Cassandra, Josephine, and Christopher; nephew, Bradford Davis and wife, Marci; nieces, Cheryl Overlock and husband, Dwight, Jackie Lawrence and husband, Glenn, Sonia Voegtlin and husband, Ken, Kiyomi Sugioka and husband, Teruhiko. Following Pete's desires, his cremated remains will be inurned at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. Arrangements entrusted to Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 1130 N.
