Evelyn Gray Conyers Pitt

February 3, 1922 ~ June 13, 2012

RED OAK - Evelyn Gray Conyers Pitt, age 90, passed away peacefully Wednesday, June 13, 2012. Born in Franklinton NC on February 3, 1922, she was the oldest child of the late Hayward and Beulah Conyers. She is also preceded in death by her husband, Richard C. “Pete” Pitt Jr. and daughter, Lynn Pitt Saunders. Evelyn or Granny, as many called her, dedicated her life to her family. Though widowed at a young age, she managed the trials in her life with dignity and strength. She provided all the physical, emotional and spiritual needs for her family. A woman of strong character, she instilled her values in her family. She was never too old to let one of her children or grandchildren know if they were out of line. Evelyn lived by faith and it was evident in her walk. She loved her church family at Red Oak Baptist Church. She enjoyed the many events sponsored for the “old folks”, as she called them, that the church provided. One of her true joys was her 90th birthday celebration held at the church; an outpouring of love that she truly appreciated. She is survived by her brother, Howard Conyers and wife Lorena of Franklinton; sister, Lena Lewis of Newport News, VA; her daughter, Lori Pitt Horton and her husband Neil of Richmond; her son, Richard Pitt and wife Judy or Fayetteville; grandchildren, Tracy Saunders, Leigh Saunders, Claire Pitt Lindsay, Will Pitt, Sean Ridge and Katie Horton; great grandchildren, Ashlyn Clay, Jessica Healy, Drew Clark, Bella Lindsay, Austin Lindsay and Layla Pitt, and great great grandson, Brayden Clark. A “Going Home” service will be held 2:00pm Saturday, June 16, 2012 at Red Oak Baptist Church with Rev. Larry Bostian officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:30pm to 1:45pm prior to the service. Burial will follow at Red Oak Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Red Oak Baptist Church, Building Fund, P. O. Box 260, Red Oak, NC 27868. Arrangements entrusted to Wheeler and Woodlief Funeral Home, 1130 N.
