Charles William Eggers

ROCKY MOUNT - Charles William Eggers (Poppie), passed away on Saturday, December 22, 2012 at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, NC. He was born on September 16, 1924 in Carteret County to the late Cora Lee and Charles Edward Eggers. He was preceded in death by his wife Betty Dobbins Eggers of 39 years. Immediately following graduation from high school, because of the pride he felt for his country, he volunteered on June 6, 1943 to the Navy in WWII as an OR Tech. He landed in France in June of 1944, the D-Day Invasion. He arrived on Iwo Jima with the 4th Marine Division of the 5th Amphibious Corps during the Marine invasion of Iwo Jima and was at the bottom of Mount Suribachi when the flag went up at Iwo Jima. He leaves to celebrate and cherish his memory, children; Ronald Edward Eggers and wife Carolyn, Teresa Eggers Morris and husband Tommy, Richard Lee Eggers and Mickie, Kim Eggers Page and husband Tim; grandchildren, Timothy Wayne Page, Jr. and wife Cassie, Ronald Edward Eggers, Jr., Betty Morris Odham and husband Dean, William Franklin Page and fiance' Jordan; great grandchildren, Garrett Emerson King, Abigail Marie Wall, Ronald Edward Eggers, III, Kaylee Jane Eggers, Haley Madison Odham, Hannah Grace Odham and his beloved dogs, Tumbles, Angel and Sunshine. After returning from the service he worked at Western Auto followed by his long service at Goodyear. After retiring from Goodyear he joined Northern Nash, mentoring students and announcing ballgames for 17 years. He took great pride in sharing his history of the Korean War and WWII with all the students at Northern Nash High School. He was an active member at First Christian Church of Rocky Mount where he enjoyed Sunday school, making speeches, yam jams and fellowship with all members. He was an active member of the Elks Lodge. He gave numerous flag day speeches and presented the flag each year to outstanding veterans in the community who fought for our country. He was also an active member of the Shrine Club and the Masons. The family wishes to thank Kindred for the love and care provided to our father. We would really like to thank the physicians and the nurses in the Cardiac ICU at Vidant Medical Center for the excellent care and loving support during this difficult time. The family will receive friends and family 7-8:30pm, Wednesday, December 26, 2012 at Wheeler Woodlief Funeral Home and other times at the home of Tim and Kim Page, 730 Bayberry Court, Nashville, NC.
