William Blaine “Bill” Dawes

ROCKY MOUNT - William Blaine *Bill* Dawes, age 87, passed away on Monday, October 3, 2016. Born in Wilson County, NC on March 2, 1929, he was the son of the late Jasper Elwood Dawes and Dorothy Jones Dawes. He was also preceded in death by his son, Richard Blaine Dawes; brothers, Alton, Thad, and Shorty Dawes; and sister, Elizabeth Dawes Lancaster. Bill started working with the City of Rocky Mount at the age of 15 as a lineman. He loved working for the City of Rocky Mount in the Utilities Department. He retired at the age of 51 as Assistant Director of Public Utilities. He loved to travel in his motorhome especially to Key West, FL. where they stayed for the month of January. Bill was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather and will be dearly missed by all those who knew him. Bill leaves behind to cherish his memory, his loving wife of 69 years, Elizabeth Glasgow Dawes; daughters, Linda Dawes Lee of Rocky Mount; and Sandra Dawes Davis and husband, Douglas, of Rocky Mount. He is also survived by two grandchildren, Ashley Davis Harper and husband, Danny; Christopher Blaine Dawes; four great-grandchildren, Tanner and Cambria Harper, McKenna Harper and Blaine Dawes; brother, Herbie Dawes of Rocky Mount; and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends and relatives on Thursday, October 6, 2016 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the home of Bill and Lib Dawes. Per Bill*s request, the family will a private Memorial Service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Englewood United Methodist Church, 300 S. Circle Drive, Rocky Mount, NC 27804. Arrangements entrusted to Wheeler and Woodlief Funeral Home Cremation Services, 1130 N. Winstead Avenue, Rocky Mount, NC.
