Wiley Oscar Cockrell, Jr., 68, passed away Tuesday, October 25, 2011. He was born in Edgecombe County, November 10, 1942 to the late Wiley Oscar Cockrell and Etta Carpenter Cockrell.
Oscar was retired from the U.S. Postal Service and served in the U.S. Army.
He is survived by one sister, Odell Hinton of Rocky Mount, and a host of nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. Oscar was preceded in death by his brother, Wiley Thurman Cockrell of Rocky Mount and sister, Gladys Edwards of Cleveland, Ohio.
A funeral service will be held 2:00p.m. Friday, October 28, 2011 at Wheeler Woodlief Funeral Home with Rev. Jason Cockrell officiating. Burial will follow at Pineview Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 1:00-2:00p.m. prior to the service.

I will sincerely miss my buddy Oscar in more ways than people know. He was a teacher to me about life (and on the pool table), he was a friend that listened and always had a comment that got me out of whatever mood I was in, and he was a loveable and caring person that a lot of people failed to take time to get to know, but once they did they found one of GOD’s gifts to society….I surely hate you are gone, but truly admire the way you lived…YOUR way was the only way and I respect that to no end! RIP Oscar!
