Walter Raleigh Terry, Sr. of Rocky Mount, N.C. formerly of San Leondro, California, died Friday, March 26, 2010. He was born in Live Oak, California December 31, 1913 to Ulysis Simpson Terry and Elizabeth Silver Terry.
Mr. Terry was a career United States Coast Guard officer with 30 years plus two months of military service of WWII. Mr. Terry served in the Medical Force in European Theatre of Operations in Normandy, France and Central Europe. His last tour of duty was at Alameda, CA where he served as Medical Administrator. After retiring from the military, Mr. Terry and his colleagues established the "Sea West Coast Guard FCM in Alameda, CA with main office in Oakland, CA and 3 branch offices. After 30 years he retired as Pres/CEO from the Sea West CG and CU.
Mr. Terry is survived by his devoted and loving wife of 54 years Elsie Rothlisberger Terry. Also surviving is one son Walter Terry, Jr. and wife Sandy of Rocky Mount; one sister, Audrey Blakely of Rio Linda, CA; three grandchildren, Scott Terry and wife Sandra, of Rocky Mount, Alicia McGill and husband Thomas of Atlanta, GA, Deborah Gibson of Rocky Mount; eight great-grandchildren.
Mr. Terry was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church; a member of the Masonic Lodge Corinthians #230AF Bering Sea Patrol Alaska Vet. Assoc.; Past and President of WO Association in Washington, DC; member of Coast Guard Combat Vets. Assoc., a member of the National Association Retired Federal Employees (NARFE). Mr. Terry was confirmed as an honoree to the official registry of "Who's Who" of American Business Leaders.
The family will receive friends and relatives from 7-8:30pm Wednesday, March 31, 2010 at Wheeler and Woodlief Funeral Home. A funeral service to honor Mr. Terry will be held at 2:00pm Thursday, April 1, 2010 at Trinity Lutheran Church with Pastor Alice Curl officiating. Burial will follow at Rocky Mount Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Trinity Lutheran Church, 433 N. Winstead Avenue, Rocky Mount NC 27804.
The Walter Terry family would like to thank the loving care, devoted and faithful staff of Guardian Care and Life Care Hospital. Their staff went above and beyond care of Mr. Terry during the last months of his declining health.
