NASHVILLE - Virginia Hayes Sustare, age 100, entered Heaven in the early morning of Monday, May 7, 2018. Virginia was born in Columbus, GA on August 13, 1917. She was preceded in death by her husband, John W. Sustare; mother, Mary Williams King; step-father, Bernard J. King; and brother, Bernard King, Jr.
Virginia lived in Valley, AL until she was 14 and then moved with her mother and step-father to Norfolk, VA and completed high school. It was there that she met and later married John W. Sustare. They made their home in Norfolk, VA where their daughter Nancy was born. They later moved to Washington, DC where John got a job with the US Army. His job took him to Sydney, Australia during World War II. Virginia and Nancy joined him shortly thereafter where they lived for two years. After returning to the US, they once again lived in Norfolk, VA and later in Raleigh. In 1949, the family moved to Nashville where Virginia lived until moving to Trinity Elms Assisted Living in Clemmons in February 2015.
Virginia was a devoted wife and mother and was always proud to say that being a homemaker was her profession. She was a generous, friendly, caring and an outgoing soul. Virginia brought great joy to her family and was a positive influence in their lives. She was interested in many things, including: sewing, knitting, gardening, reading historical novels and traveling. Virginia was a member of the Nashville Modern Study Club for many years. She had a great sense of humor that was uniquely hers; she often didn't realize just how humorous she was. Our family gatherings were always filled with joy and laughter!
Virginia leaves behind to cherish her memory, daughter, Nancy Sustare Drugan and husband, Peter, of Lewisville. She is also survived by granddaughters, Tivoli W. Martin of Charleston, SC, and Michelle W. Dyson of Lewisville; great-granddaughters, Alex Marie Henning of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, and Avery Michelle Dyson of Lewisville; brother, Ralph King and wife, Robin, of Atlanta, GA; nephew, Raymond King and wife, Robin, and their daughter, Courtney, of Atlanta, GA; nephew, Ralph King, Jr., and wife, Julie, and their daughters, Lisa and Jessica, of Raleigh; niece, Karen King Hoban and husband, Mark, and their sons, Brendon and Mark, Jr., and their daughter, Mary Kate, of Deluth, GA; nephew, Jonathan King and wife, Ashton, of Atlanta, GA; and niece, Allison King Grippo and husband, Ryan, and their daughters, Grace, Mary Carson and Amelia, of Nashville, TN; and many other loving family members and friends.
