Virginia Colville Boyd

Virginia Colville Boyd, 89, died Sunday, February 17, 2013 at Universal Healthcare (Nash Grove Manor) in Nashville NC following a long illness and then a sudden, rapid decline in recent days. She was born in 1924, in Indianapolis, Indiana, to Grace and Dale Colville. Virginia was raised in Indianapolis. She is survived by her only brother, Eugene Colville of Indianapolis. She was the first woman to replace a man during World War II in the Metallurgical Laboratory-Physical Testing department at the Bridgeport Brass Company in Indianapolis. In 1943 she married her husband, Robert R, Boyd, Sr. of Mooresville, Indiana. They were married for 62 years. He preceded her in death in May, 2005. Virginia and her husband were owners of Boyds Point Yacht Club and Boyds Marine Service on Lake Lemon near Bloomington, Indiana from 1954 to 1976. She was very involved in the business community while also raising an active family. She developed and operated a system of training and dispatching volunteers for a 24-hour M.E.R.C. Ambulance Service and helped organize the 300 member Chamber of Commerce in Bloomington, Indiana and served as its secretary for eight years. They semi-retired to Silver Springs, Florida in 1976. They continued a small marine service business. While in her early 60s, Virginia earned an Associate Degree in Building Construction Technology from Central Florida Community College. She graduated with honors and utilized her degree and business background well into her 70s. She also took several writing courses and has left her family with some wonderful stories about her life and their lives growing up. In 1999 they moved to Rocky Mount, NC to be closer to family and to enjoy being a greater part of their great-grandchildrens lives. They were very active in the Nash County Senior Center and Virginia enjoyed volunteering at Sterling House. She was a member of First Christian Church of Rocky Mount and an active member of the Christian Womens Fellowship. Virginia was a faithful loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She leaves to cherish her memory three children: son, Robert Boyd II and wife Sue of Rocky Mount; daughter, Donna Boyd Hoglund and husband Gus; son, John Boyd, all of West Coxsackie NY; three granddaughters, Christine Boyd Delaney and husband Ken of Omaha, Nebraska, Kathline Boyd Jolly and husband Chris of Wake Forest, and Deborah Boyd Pannell and husband Michael of Rocky Mount; two grandsons, Eric Hoglund and wife Jean of West Coxsackie NY and Karl Hoglund and wife Tracy of Milo ME; four great-grandsons, Garrett Michael Pannell of Rocky Mount, Smith Hudson Jolly of Wake Forest, Gabriel Donald Hoglund and Benjamin John Hoglund of West Coxsackie NY; and two great-granddaughters, Olivia Boyd Pannell of Rocky Mount and Grace Ruth Hoglund of West Coxsackie NY. A memorial service will be held at First Christian Church, 1101 West Haven Blvd., Rocky Mount NC at 2:00pm on Thursday, February 21, 2013. Visitation with family and friends will follow the service.
