Vertus Eugene Barnes passed to eternity on December 3, 2012. He was born on October 3, 1937 in Nash County to the late William Hardy Barnes and Mattie Ruth Joyner Barnes. Eugene attended West Edgecombe Baptist Church until his health interfered and also Barnes Hill Freewill Baptist, his childhood church on occasions. Eugene began his career with the Atlantic Coastline Railroad which later became Seaboard Coastline Railroad and is presently CSX. He retired on disability in 1997 after 42+ years of service. He was a Mason in the local Corinthian Lodge #230, Sudan Temple. Eugene enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He was a member of Early Times Hunting Club where he enjoyed hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed cooking, eating and good fellowship with his friends at the Edgecombe Hilton. Eugene enjoyed being part of the cook crew at the Rocky Mount Shrine Club until he had to stop due to his health.
He was a loving husband, father and grandfather (Deda) and will be greatly missed. He leaves to cherish his memories; his wife of 57 years, Helen Parker Barnes of the home, daughter Vicki Barnes Raper and husband Steve Raper of Rocky Mount, NC, son Anthony (Tony) Barnes and wife Sandy Carpenter Barnes of Grimesland, NC; three grandchildren; Crystal Leigh Raper Shearin and husband Daniel of Rocky Mount NC; Travis Barnes and wife Katie Knupp Barnes of Tampa, FL; Mallory Barnes of Grimesland NC; one sister Brenda Gail Barnes Thorpe and husband Alexander P. Thorpe III (Sandy) of Wrightsville Beach NC and Rocky Mount NC, two brothers, Jimmy Barnes and wife Grace Hedgepath Barnes of Rock Hill SC, Roger Barnes and wife Cindy Barnes of Huntersville NC; two aunts Cleo Barnes Worrell and husband Lonnie Worrell of Nashville NC, Beulah Barnes Lindsey and husband Monroe Lindsey of Wilson NC; brother-in-law Horace Parker and wife Mary Lynn Vernon Parker of Rocky Mount NC, five nieces, two nephews and numerous cousins.
There will be a Memorial Service to celebrate his life on Thursday December 6 at 6:00 pm at Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home in Rocky Mount with visitation following the service. A private burial will be held at a later date.
We would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. John Huffman, his nurses Delta and Tammy and the rest of his staff. Also, to Hospice of Nash Generals caring staff especially nurse, Nancy Brinkley, CNA Joan Colbert, Debbie Stilley, Chaplain Keith Griffin and Dr. Doug Boyette.
