Vera Gale Spencer

WILMINGTON Vera (Mozelle) Gale Spencer passed Tuesday, January 25, 2011 at Lower Cape Fear Hospice Care Center at age 100. She was a resident of Silver Stream Health and Rehab Center in Wilmington for almost five years. A long-time resident of Rocky Mount, N.C., Mrs. Spencer was born on Feb. 14, 1910 in Burke County, N.C. She was a daughter of the late Julius Nelson Gale and Minnie Ledford Gale, and was predeceased by her husband, Southgate Alexis (Lex) Spencer, and by three brothers and a sister. Survivors include her son, Carroll Alexis Spencer, and his wife, Sherry A. Spencer, of Wilmington; her daughter, Marilyn Spencer McKee and her husband, A. James McKee, of Seabrook Island, SC, and grandchildren Carroll A. (Lex) Spencer II, Earl M. (Monty) Spencer and Charles Mitchell III, all of Wilmington; Brett J. McKee of Raleigh, Sarah M. Mosqueda of Austin, TX, and Seth C. McKee of St. Petersburg, FL, and four great-grandchildren. Also surviving are her sister, Estelle Gale Brendle of Hickory; a sister-in-law, Shirley Rhodes of Morganton and special friends, Theo and Molly Pitt of Rocky Mount, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. As a young woman Mrs. Spencer was a Licensed Practical Nurse, practicing in Morganton and Statesville. She later worked for the WPA as supervisor of sewing centers in Western North Carolina and during World War II was employed in war-related industries in California, Ohio and Charlotte. After moving with her husband to Rocky Mount in 1944, she assisted him in his wholesale business and later in real estate development. Through the years, she volunteered in various local organizations, including the PTA, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, Red Cross Blood Mobile, YWCA and Meals on Wheels. She served as a board member, circle president and Sunday school class president at First United Methodist Church and assisted with youth groups. Mrs. Spencer was a long-time leader of the Rocky Mount Woman's Club. She enjoyed playing bridge in several clubs and also taught YWCA bridge classes. In the span of almost 101 years she witnessed many marvels of civilization ranging from horse-and-wagon days to space and computer ages, and also endured the 1918 flu pandemic, the Great Depression and numerous wars. She will be remembered for her love of family, friends and church and for her devotion to helping others. The family will receive Thursday at 7 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall of Winter Park Presbyterian Church in Wilmington. Service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church of Rocky Mount. The family will receive guests from 10-10:45 a.m. prior to the service.
