Travis Edwin Davenport, 83, passed away February 23, 2013. He was
born January 1, 1930, son of the late Travis and Lillian Jones
Davenport of Rocky Mount. Ed was educated in the Rocky Mount City
Schools and earned a bachelors in Business Administration from The
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1951. He was a member
of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity.
Following the completion of his formal education, Ed was accepted in
the US Naval officer training program in Newport, RI. He was
commissioned in 1952 and served aboard the USS Strong during the
Korean War. Ed served as Combat Information officer and was the
destroyers air traffic controller. Later in his naval career, he was
assigned to the staff of Adm. H.H. McLean, Commandant, Sixth Naval
District, as a Special Services Officer.
Eds lifes work was employment with financial institutions, serving
many years as chief executive of Builders Federal Savings, a regional
mortgage banking and savings institution. He was a founding director
of RMIC, a mortgage banking insurance company based in Winston Salem.
He served as president of the NC Mortgage Investment Corp and
president of the Rocky Mount Board of Realtors in the early 1960s and
was co-author of the local multiple listing service. During
retirement, Ed became a director of Raleigh Federal Savings Bank.
Ed was predeceased by his wife of 56 years, Anne Kinard Davenport. He
is survived by his daughters, Alison Davenport and partner, Bob
Shaffer, Laura McNeill and husband Danny, and Anna Davenport and
husband Pat Hurban. His grandchildren are Lindsay Strickland and
husband Steven, Travis Kirkpatrick, Lillian Hurban, Zarina Davenport,
Lauren McNeill, Kelly Lienhop and husband Chris and Brad McNeill. He
is also survived by his brother-in-law, Fredrick W. Kinard, Jr.
The family will receive friends at 208 Piedmont Avenue, Rocky Mount on
Tuesday, February 26 from 6:00- 8:00PM. Following a private family
burial, a memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church
of Rocky Mount, Wednesday, February 27 at 11AM, with the Reverend
Peter Bynum officiating. Following the service, family members will
receive friends at 208 Piedmont Avenue. In lieu of flowers, memorials
may be made to First Presbyterian Church Pastors Discretionary Fund.
