MOREHEAD CITY - Steven "Steve" Marvin Howell of Morehead City passed away peacefully on December 24, 2021. He was born September 20, 1949 in Nash County to the late Jesse Marvin Howell and Juanita Bloodworth Howell of Rocky Mount. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Deborah Winters Howell (October 26, 2016); they were married for 46 years. He is survived by his two sons, Jonathan Howell (Kristal) of Boone and David Howell (Meredith) of Raleigh; grandchildren Chloe and Sophie Howell of Boone who called him Ay-Day; brothers Stanley Howell of Harkers Island and Philip Howell (Karol) of Pamlico County; sister-in-law Linda Ennis of Rocky Mount; one niece and numerous nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews.
Steve grew up in Rocky Mount as a Christian and was a member of Englewood Baptist Church. He graduated from Northern Nash High School in 1969 and studied Computer Science at Edgecombe Community College. In 1969, he married the late Deborah Winters Howell. Together, they formed Howell's Antiques and Cheap Thrills Jewelry. They conducted business in various stores and malls across the entire state, specializing in glass, linens, Victorian furniture, collectibles, and costume jewelry. His ultimate passion was restoring antique telephones to museum quality and was known as one of the world's best. Over his life, he held over 35 jobs, however, he spent a majority of his career working for Carolina Telephone Company, formerly a subsidiary of Sprint and later Embarq.
Steve was also a master craftsman and could fix or build anything. Considered to be one of the most dependable, hard-working men you would ever meet, he often accomplished the impossible as a single worker. He put others before himself and was always willing to lend a hand. From power lines and underneath city streets to personal homes and large fields of grass, his work and craftsmanship is widespread across eastern North Carolina.
Outside of work, Steve enjoyed the study of birds. In 2020, he beat a long-standing record of the most species seen in North Carolina in one year's time. He was enthusiastic about anything placed in front of him and enjoyed the world for all that it had to offer. Although a quiet man at first glance, Steven was knowledgeable, conversational, and a comedian at heart. He was comfortable in his own skin. He was unique in many ways and did things the way he wanted to. He challenged the norm and was a critical thinker and an analyst. He rarely showed shame or regret; he was honest. And finally, at times, was emotional and never shied away from shedding a tear in front of others.
Steve spent the last 5 years residing in Morehead City where he and his girlfriend, Donna Mullen of Newport, enjoyed the local seafood, grilled meals on their back patios, walked the sandy beaches, and traveled throughout the state that they so loved.
A Funeral Service to celebrate Steve's life will be held on Thursday, December 30, 2021 at 11:00 AM in the Chapel of Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home & Cremation Services. Burial will follow the service at Rocky Mount Memorial Park. Visitation with the family will be from 10:00 AM to 10:45 AM prior to the service in the Atrium of Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home.
The family would like to express their deep appreciation for the care provided during the last few months to Donna Mullen, to Lady the Cocker Spaniel for her warmth, and more recently, to the New Hanover Regional Medical Center doctors and staff.
In memory of Steve, he would tell you to get outside, take in the fresh air, go for a walk, observe your surroundings, and enjoy the sights, smells, colors of nature. There is nothing more giving and beautiful than what's outside your doors.
Flowers are welcome.

So sorry to hear of Steve’s passing. He was a great guy. He loved his family, his old telephones, his birds, and all of God’s beautiful world. Take care of each other now, as he would want you to do. We’ll see him again one day!
Time is one of life’s pleasures that is always in short supply. Steve and I has some great times growing up as neighbors. I was Best Man at his wedding. What a Super Guy! Prayers for his family.

My deepest sympathy goes out to Steve’s family and friends. I met Steve through our mutual friend, John Fussell, when I joined the group on birdwatching outings on Sunday mornings in Carteret and surrounding counties. Steve was always so enthusiastic, energetic and funny; just a very fine person to be around while looking for birds. The group’s birdwatching adventures over the years covered a wide range of bird habitats, so we saw a lot of birds! From 430am on May mornings listening for Black Rails on the Cedar Island Causeway, to the end of Oceanana Pier watching for Jaegers, from Haywood Landing during Spring migration listening for Warblers, to Shackleford Banks to check again for the Bar-tailed Godwit (and Reddish Egrets, Long-billed Curlews…) to a forest road deep in the Croatan listening for Black-throated Green Warblers, from 5am excursions in ‘the farm’ listening for owls to crossing a savannah under longleaf pines, listening and photographing a Bachman’s Sparrow atop a clump of shrubs. In 2019 I moved out of the area but the good memories of our group outings abound. This past May while visiting family in Morehead City, I decided to swing by Fort Macon State Park to see the White-winged Dove. There was Steve, sitting on a short wall, patiently waiting for the bird. I joined him and within a few minutes, we were rewarded! That was the last time I visited and birded with Steve. I’m grateful to have met him. God bless you all – family and friends of Steve Howell.
My heart is heavy for I have known you since 3rd. grade at Williford Elementary School and then high school. Then, years later in high school, my daughter Kristal and your wonderful son Jonathan fell in love and married. They gave us two beautiful granddaughters, Chloe and Sophie who will miss their Aday so much. . You have two wonderful sons Jonathan and David left behind and a daughter-law Kristal who all love you so much. I will miss you as well. You have been my friend all these years as well as part of my family. I will miss your humor, your artistic skills, your bird photography that you enjoyed so much.. I don’t think there wasn’t anything that you couldn’t do… even putting on your own roof shingles on your house when you and Deborah were living here.. You could do most anything! A man of many skills and knowledge. Now you are in Heaven with your devoted wife Deborah,,your sweet Mama and Dad. All of the people left behind who love you will grieve and miss you so much. that words cannot express the loss of you.Jon, David, Kristal, Chloe and Sophie, Stanley, Phillip, Donna, and all the rest of your famil and friends. We all love you and will see you in Heaven when our time comes. Rest In Peace now our loved one, for God has gained another angel.🙏❤️

Donna, I am so sorry for your loss. My prayers go out for you and the family. God bless!!
I am so very sorry to learn that Steve has passed away. We worked together at the telephone company in Network Switching in the Rocky Mt – Washington St office. I also knew Debbie too. Steve always had projects going on besides his phone company job. He was a person that had to stay busy whether it was painting the house, carpentry repairs, or anything that needed fixing. He was a very nice and easy going kind of guy which made him easy to work with on the job. It was a pleasure to work with him. I knew he loved the beach and one day he said he loved surfing which surprised me. I didn’t know he enjoyed surfing! I am glad he got to move to the beach and I hope he got to surf some while living there. My thoughts and prayers are with his family today. I know he loved them dearly! Just remember his spirit will be there with you on the beach when you see those birds where he spent so much time watching and waiting. And his spirit will be with you when you see the sun’s rays bouncing off the waves as they roll in and turn to foam. He will always be with you. RIP Steve! You have earned your rewards in heaven!
I met Steve through the Rocky Mount Christmas bird count. He certainly was a good addition to my life. At the end of one count, we still needed a screech owl for the day. Steve thought he knew where we could find one. We got into his old white van and went over to Cool Springs Rd and parked on the side of the road. Steve pulled out a speaker from the myriad things in the van and placed it on top of the van and played a screech owl call. Sure enough in about a minute we heard an answer! Besides our birding connection, Steve had a real estate license as well as I and called me a couple of times to talk real estate when he was preparing to sell his house in Rocky Mount and when Donna decided to sell hers in Nash County. I got to see the level of his skill as a home remodeler at Donna’s house. He had done a very professional job remodeling half of her house which really contributed to the value of her house and the ease with which it sold! Steve told me about his collection of antique phones that he had to start disposing when he moved to Morehead City; I’m sorry I never got to see those. I followed Steve on Facebook and enjoyed seeing all of the pictures of birds he posted and hearing about his adventures during his big year. A lot of people enjoyed those posts and were sadden to read his post that said he wouldn’t be able to post much any more. Steve was a kind, sensitive, interesting guy and I will miss him very much! Special condolences to Donna who I know adored him and am sure took very good care of him in his last journey. God bless you all!
To Philip and Karol; Donna and the rest of Steve’s Siblings; Children and extended family – first of all, what a beautifully written obituary. I felt like I truly knew Steve, just from reading these precious words. It was so good to see him and Donna at Summer’s wedding a couple of months back. May each of you hold special memories of Steve close to your heart. May God bless you with peace and understand that only He can provide. Love, Brenda and Ray Stilley Karol’s former In-Laws
Went to school and graduated with Steve – he was a special guy. Sophia Faircloth Bridges
