Sarah Mae Williams

May 30, 1926 ~ February 3, 2013

Sarah Mae Williams, resident of Nash Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, died at Nash General Hospital on Sunday evening, February 3, 2013, at the age of 86. A native of Edgecombe County, Sarah was the daughter of the late Benjamin David Williams and late Lettie Pearl Dawes Williams. She was baptized at Second Presbyterian Church on June 9, 1936. After graduating from Rocky Mount High School in 1944, she began a clerical career at Memorial Clinic, followed by ten years in the office of Motor Bearings and Parts Company. In 1956 she became a partner associated with C. W. Williams Fire Equipment Company, and soon took to the highway as the first female in sales for American-LaFrance Fire Trucks, including making occasional deliveries, which provided many amusing anecdotes. Because of her work she lived in Florence, S. C., Lexington and Lumberton, N. C., but Rocky Mount was always home base. Sarah had a life-long love for music and song and worship. Her childhood days of pumping the self-playing piano sparked her interest and talent. She was organist for the Rocky Mount Seventh Day Adventist Church, where she became a member in the early 1950s. In later years, also, she sang in the choir at the Englewood Presbyterian Church. In the community she was an enthusiastic member of the Tar River Chorus, and member and officer in Rocky Mount Business and Professional Women. Sarah was preceded in death by her brothers, Clarence Orville Williams of Rocky Mount, and David Earl Williams of Greensboro. She is survived by her brother, Benjamin Franklin Williams of Burlington, and three sisters-in-law, Rachel Barnes Williams (Orville), Patricia Bell Williams (Ben), and Nancy Coggins Williams (David), and eight nieces and nephews. . Sincere gratitude is expressed to all friends and relatives and staffs who have faithfully, and lovingly, visited, written, and cared for Sarah over her many years in the nursing facility. A graveside service in Witness to the Resurrection will be conducted at Pineview Cemetery on Wednesday, February 6, 2013 at 2:00p.m. with Pastor Jeff Sagala officiating. The body will remain at the funeral home until one hour before the service. Memorials may be made to the Englewood Presbyterian Church Choir Fund, 100 South Englewood Drive, Rocky Mount, NC 27804 or to the Rocky Mount Seventh Day Adventist Church, 901 Columbia Ave. Rocky Mount NC 27804.
