Ruth Shearin Parrish

April 9, 1924 ~ September 23, 2010

Ruth Shearin Parrish, 86, passed away Thursday, September 23, 2010. She was born on April 09, 1924 in Franklin County, the daughter of the late John Earl Shearin and Viola Pearce Shearin. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Quince "Rip" Parrish; and brothers, Hubert, Roger, and Wilson Shearin. Ruth retired from Montgomery Ward. She was a member of Sunset Avenue Baptist Church and a former member of the VFW Auxiliary. Her gift of helping others led her to spend many hours volunteering with NGH Hospice and other organizations. Known to many as "Granny", she was far from the typical granny. She loved her friends and family and was always "in-charge". Granny's love of life had her always doing something, whether it be having fun, working, volunteering or just baking a cake. Ruth leaves behind her daughter, Patricia P. Nelms and husband Cooper of Nashville; two grandchildren, Andrea Nelms Johnson and husband Sam of Nashville, and Bryan C. Nelms and wife, Anna of Red Oak; and four great grandchildren, Davis and Spencer Johnson of Nashville and Chad and Sarah Nelms of Red Oak. She is also survived by her sister, Bertha S. Moore and husband Charlie of Louisburg; and sister-in-law Doris T. Shearin of Louisburg. A service to remember Ruth will be held at 2:00p.m. Sunday, September 26, 2010 at Wheeler and Woodlief Funeral Home with Dr. Blake Dempsey and Rev. Steve Roberson officiating. Visitation with the family will be one hour prior to the service and at other times at the home of her daughter. Burial will follow at Red Oak Cemetery. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Hospice of Nash General, 2460 Curtis Ellis Drive, Rocky Mount NC 27804. The family would like to thank the caregivers at both Sterling House and Breckenridge for their loving care for our dear Granny and Mother. Arrangements entrusted to Wheeler and Woodlief Funeral Home, 1130 N. Winstead Ave., Rocky Mount, NC. 1. I have so many lovely memories of Granny (& Rip & Bertha). She was the first Granny I had known. (We called our grandmas Grandmama.) I always said I wanted the kids I would have one day to call my mother Granny because Granny Parris was so fun, so lively, so vivacious. (My oldest couldn’t pronounce Granny and thus the grands call her Gangi but close enough.) I love you all and will be lifting you up in my prayers prayers of celebration for a life well lived, and prayers for peace as you all adjust to a world that is not quite as lovely as it once was.
