Roy Garland Brantley, age 92, died on Sunday, November 9, 2014, at Spring Arbor Assisted Living after a period of declining health. Born in Wilson County on August 26, 1922, he was the son of the late Bijah B. Brantley and Arma Rena Denton Brantley. He was also predeceased by one sister, Mildred B. Ricardo of Chesapeake, VA.
Garland was a graduate of Rocky Mount Senior High School and served in the United States Navy during World War II. He was a journalism graduate of the University of North Carolina and spent his career on North Carolina newspapers. When he retired from the newspaper field, he became associated with his sister, Ruby Braswell, in the real estate industry and later operated a real estate appraisal business.
He leaves behind his wife of sixty-six years, Irene Cockrell Brantley; son, Dr. Jeffrey G. Brantley and his wife, Mary, of Durham, NC; daughter, Carolyn Brantley Moessen of Rocky Mount, NC; sisters, Ruby B. Braswell of Rocky Mount, NC, and Dorothy Maney of Chesapeake, VA. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held Friday, November 14, 2014 at 1:00 pm at Rocky Mount Memorial Park with Pastor Carlton Cockrell officiating. Visitation will be held at Wheeler and Woodlief Funeral Home & Cremation Services Thursday, November 13, 2014 from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm.
