Rocky Mount - Robert Joseph Poythress, 48, passed away, December 25, 2011, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Mr. Poythress was born in Rocky Mount, NC, February 27, 1963, son of John Young Poythress and the late Betty Duvall Poythress.
Robert loved to hunt and fish, also enjoyed spending time in the mountains of North Carolina with his extended family.
He leaves behind his wife, Melisa Vernon Poythress and daughter Brooke Nicole Poythress of the home; son, Michael L. Farmer of Greenville, NC; father, Johnny Poythress of Rocky Mount; brother, Billy Poythress and wife Diane of Rocky Mount; sister, Teresa Dorsey and husband Billy of Moyock, NC.
The family will receive family and friends from 7:00 - 8:30 pm Tuesday, December 27, 2011 at Wheeler Woodlief Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held 2:00 PM Wednesday, December 28, 2011 at Rocky Mount Memorial Park with Rev. David Proctor officiating.

Please accept condolences from C.R. Poythress, Jr., his wife Wanda, and mother Elvin. Johnny is my first cousin although it has been years since we have seen one another. I never had the pleasure of meeting my second cousins and am very sorry for this loss at such a young age. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

I will remember him for his strength and how he loved to help other people. I work with Melisa and everytime he called the office to talk to her, he would either tell me a joke or disguise his voice as an irate customer or an aggressive salesman….fooled me everytime. ) Praying for all who had the pleasure of knowing and loving Robert.
To the Poythress family I am so saddened to hear that Robert has gone to live in eternity. Melissa, Brooke, Michael, Johnny, Bill, & Teresa my heart aches for your loss. You are in my heart and I am praying that God will supply you with all the comfort and peace you need at this time. I understand how it feels to lose someone (loss of my son in August 2010) very dear to you but I would like to say that no matter what circumstances you may face, God has a plan and he is still in control of every situation. Please just look unto him for your comfort because he is the only one who can supply what you need. Your hearts are heavy and shattered but God knows every tear you have cried and how you are hurting but he is also the one who can put it all back together for you. I know its hard to realize at the moment, but just remember if God has brought you to a situation, he will see you through it!!!! Just hang onto all the memories you have of him and just trust in our great Lord Jesus. I will truely miss my baby brother.He is with mama now no more pain.He has left his mark here through his wife Missy and his daughter Brooke.I love you Robert.

I only had the pleasure of meeting Robert a few times before he became sick again. He was always nice and had a friendly hello. Nothing shy about this man and he supported me in my time of need. That is a measure of how great a man he was. I know that Robert will be watching over and protecting all of us from above. Rest in Peace my friend! May we all get to see you again sometime in the future. My thoughts are with you Missy, Brooke, and all of the family.
LIL Robert was a great guy and a pleasure to be around! Always had a smile. I will never forget him visiting Robbie and I when we lived in Emerald Isle and they had a place in Atlantic Beach. It was a night full of laughter. Blessings and Peace to his family. Mindy Brown

Billy and family, I am so so sorry to hear about this, especially at such a late time. My heart is broken for all of you. As a sister I know first hand how horrible it is to bury a sibling. A pain like no other. As a wife, it is my biggest fear. I wish I could say the words to take away all of your pain. Although Billy is the only one that I know, I promise with all my heart to pray for the entire family as well as for Johnny. I will also put Johnny’s name on our prayer list at our church.
