Phyllis Leggett Jacobs

November 2, 1931 ~ March 29, 2015

On March 29, 2015, Phyllis Leggett Jacobs, 83, passed away peacefully in Rocky Mount, NC. Phyllis was born in Rocky Mount on November 2, 1931 to the late Clarence Edwin Leggett and Alice Swanson Leggett. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jacob Madison Jacobs, Jr. and sisters, Louise, Christine, Ruth, Grace, and Jean. She is survived by daughter Lu Unger and son-in-law Mike, of Rocky Mount, and several nieces and nephews for whom she cared deeply. She is also survived by her extended family of several cousins and many dear friends. She graduated from Rocky Mount High School in 1950 and Flora MacDonald College in 1954. She then began a rewarding career in teaching history and chorus, later focusing on guidance counseling. Phyllis is remembered for playing the piano and organ for many groups, but closest to her heart was playing for various Christian gatherings. Believing that faith is to be shared with others through both music and service, she became a certified lay speaker in the United Methodist Church. She served in that capacity for more than 20 years at Bethlehem UMC and Whitakers UMC while remaining devoted to her home church, St. Paul UMC. The family would like to thank Dr. Dan Crocker and his staff, Rev. Dr. Jerry Jackson, and the staffs at The Sterling House and Nash General Hospital for their compassionate care. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Paul UMC in Rocky Mount. Visitation will be held on April 2, 2015 from 12:30 to 2:00pm followed by a celebration of life at 2:00pm at St. Paul United Methodist Church, 1217 Bethlehem Rd, in Rocky Mount. Interment will take place at Pineview Cemetery immediately following the service. Arrangements entrusted to Wheeler and Woodlief Funeral Home Cremation Services, 1130 N. 3. Phyllis was a joy to know and to work with in ministry; it was a pleasure to travel with her too. She loved God and the United Methodist Church. I’m thankful that she was part of my life. To her family, in this Holy Week we are reminded of God’s love and His suffering because of the death of His Son, Jesus. John Wesley reportedly said on his death bed, The best of all is that God is with us……). God is with us and God offers comfort, peace and strength.

  4. How ironic that I was just looking at some of our wedding pictures tonight! Mrs. Jacobs played for our wedding almost 36 years ago at St. Paul United Methodist Church. She was such a dear lady. No doubts at all as to where she is now! Our sympathy to her family. Charles and Debbie Batts Winstead

  5. Lu and family, I shall always cherish the memories I have of Phyllis. In my first pastorate I met her as a Lay Speaker. She filled for me in Bethlehem UMC once each month. Over the years I looked forward to seeing her at all our gatherings. Phyllis was a wonderful Christian lady and has won her crown as a saint. She was an inspiration to me and I truly loved her. Let us rejoice together even as we grieve. Betty B. Willis

  6. Mrs. Jacobs was a wonderful teacher and friend. She taught Challenge of Democracy the year I was in her class. She always smiled and freely gave pats on the back as a way to encourage her students. I never heard anyone say a bad thing about her. I was blessed to know her and to spend a year of my life in her class.

  7. Ms. Jacobs was a great chorus teacher and it was obvious she loved her job as well as her students and I was privileged to have been one of her chorus students. She loved each and every one of us and although it has been many years now I can still remember all of us wanting to do our very best for her. She brought out the very best in each and every one of us. She truly was an example of what a teacher should be. Rest in peace dear lady. Donna Underwood Lawson Massey Hill High School Phantom Class of 1973.

  8. Mrs. Jacobs will always be remembered as a wonderful teacher and mentor by her students at Massey Hill HS. I was one of those lucky students. My prayers to her family.

  9. Many of us at Whitakers UMC will always remember Phyllis as our spiritual mother. She was so filled with the Holy Spirit that you could feel the joy, love and peace of God while in her presence. Love………that was her gift to everyone she met. A gifted speaker, spiritual leader, and beloved friend, she is already missed by all who knew her. Sheila Lanier

  11. As we face the pain of losing someone we love, take comfort in the Bible. One day the last enemy death will be brought to nothing. 1 Cor. 15 26 We can take comfort in the knowing that we will see our loved ones again, in the resurrection. John 3 16 What a wonderful gift we have been given, to have the hope of seeing our loved ones once more. Jesus said I am the resurrection, & the life. John 11 25

  12. It was a blessing to know Phyllis Jacobs. I knew her from Sterling House. When she could she attended the Bible Study on Wednesday night.
