ROCKY MOUNT – Paul John Legaj, age 76, passed away on Wednesday, September 14, 2022. Born in Wayne County, MI on March 3, 1946, he was the son of the late John J. Legaj and Irene Ostraska Legaj. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Michael J. Legaj and by his stepmother, Emily Legaj.
Paul was a devoted member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church for many years. Additionally, he was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 4600 and the Rocky Mount Elks Lodge 1038. Paul retired from Cummins Engine Plant after 33 years, was an avid golfer and talented wood worker. He enjoyed spending time with his family especially with his children and grandchildren. A loving and committed husband, father, grandfather, and dear friend to many, Paul will be forever loved and deeply missed by all those who knew him.
Paul is survived by his wife of 57 ½ years, Susan Manley Legaj; his sons, Paul M. Legaj and wife, Melba, of Rocky Mount and John F. Legaj and wife, Molly, of Port Washington, WI; his daughter, Andrea Legaj-Milks of Elm City; his grandchildren, Michael, Joshua, and Colin Legaj and Brandon Milks.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, September 19, 2022, at 11:00 AM at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, 331 Hammond Street, Rocky Mount, NC 27804 with Father Tim Meares celebrating with a recitation of the Rosary at 10:15 AM prior to the service. Visitation with the family will be held on Sunday, September 18, 2022, from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM at the family home and on Monday, September 19, 2022, starting at 9:30 AM at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Paul’s memory to either the NCC Foundation – Paul J. Legaj Memorial Scholarship Fund, 522 N. Old Carriage Road, Rocky Mount, NC 27804, or to the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic School, 331 Hammond Street, Rocky Mount, NC 27804, or to the Knights of Columbus Council 4600, 331 Hammond St., Rocky Mount, NC 27804.

The thing I remember most about Mr Legaj was his big smile and happy demeanor, always seemed to be having a good time. He was a great guy and the world is certainly a bit dimmer without him. My condolences to the Legaj family for the loss of a their loved one. I will always have a special memory of Paul as he was my cart mate when I scored my first hole in one. Paul’s signature is on the scorecard, in his impeccable handwriting, that hangs on my wall. I also have a picture of Paul, Bob B., Richard U. and myself commemorating the event on my wall. Paul, Gary W. and Jimmy C. and I had a great time driving down to Myrtle Beach for a number of years. Paul was a excellent golfer and also a great person to be around. He will be missed by all of his friends. May God bless him and his entire family!

My deepest condolences to the Legaj family. Paul was a kind,warm,caring and generous man. I mainly knew Paul through the sport of golf. I played many rounds of golf during our friendship at Northgreen and many excursions to Myrtle Beach. He was kind enough to drive on many of those trips. i will cherish my memories of friendship close to my heart. He will be missed by many! Rest in peace Paul
