P. G. Cobb

March 29, 1920 ~ August 10, 2016

P. G. Cobb, Jr., 96, died August 10, 2016. He was born and raised in Rocky Mount, North Carolina and grew up on Rose Street. Recently, he moved from Charlotte, N. C. to the North Carolina State Veterans Home in Kinston, N. C. Mr. Cobb was pre-deceased by his mother, Annie Hooker Cobb, his father, P. G. Cobb, Sr., and his sister, Mildred Cobb. His wife of 75 years, Hilda Cousins Cobb, died in March 2016. Survivors are his sons, Carl, Kenneth (wife Kathy), Leroy (wife Karen), six grandchildren (Shelby, Aidan Marie, Morgan, Mary Kate, Catt, and Matthew), and three great grandchildren (Grace, Maggie and Truman). P. G. and Hilda married on June 21, 1941. In the summer of 1942, P. G., joined the U. S. Navy as a machinist in the 37th Naval Construction Battalion (Sea Bees) and spent most of the next 2 years in the South Pacific alongside U. S. Marines and troops from Australia and New Zealand. He was more than justifiably proud of having served his country during war and supported his three sons decisions to serve in the Marine Corps. After WWII, P. G. accepted employment in the insurance industry where he worked until retirement in 1982. During this period the family lived in Raleigh, Greensboro, and Charlotte. P. G. Cobb, Jr. was deeply committed to God and family, actively participating with Hilda in church life at First Methodist Church; serving for years as a Cub Scout and Boy Scout leader; and supporting his sons various school and athletic activities. At the request of his family, in 1984 P. G. compiled a brief history of his life. A statement closing this narrative embodies what life meant to him: “It has been a good life and God has blessed me with a fine family and in many other ways, for which I am grateful.” A Graveside Burial of Cremains Service will be held on Saturday, March 4, 2017 at 1:00 PM at Pineview Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to Wheeler and Woodlief Funeral Home Cremation Services, 1130 N. Winstead Avenue, Rocky Mount, NC 27804.
