Oreole Gaskill Turner

May 25, 1918 ~ June 8, 2013

Oreole Gaskill Turner died peacefully Saturday, June 8, 2013. She was born in Rocky Mount on May 25, 1918, the daughter of the late George Gilbert Gaskill and Anzy Lanie Gay Gaskill. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harvey Rudolph Turner; her sister, Anzy Lanie Gaskill Turner; her brother, George Gibbons Gaskill and her grandson, Travis Grant Batchelor. She is survived by her only child, Gail Turner Batchelor and her husband Billy Ray Batchelor of Enfield; her granddaughter, Pamela Batchelor Larimer and her husband Robert Paul Larimer; and her great-grandchildren, Anne Grant Larimer and Paul Batchelor Larimer. She is also survived by her brother Deidrick Hart Gaskill and his wife, Vangie, of Tarboro; and a sister-in-law, Agnes Joyner Turner. Oreole was a lifelong member of Arlington Baptist Church and always enjoyed her Sunday School class and her circle. She met her husband, Harvey, while waitressing at the Ricks Hotel Coffee Shop during World War II and they married three months later and remained married until his death in 1985. Before moving to Brekenridge Retirement Center in 2006, she loved to have "get-togethers" for her friends and family at her home on Bedford Road when her brother and sister would come to visit from out of state. She was never interested in learning to drive but she was fortunate to have many good and loyal friends who always enjoyed picking her up for an afternoon of shopping and visiting. She always said it was good to have your own spending money and worked part-time at Boone's Grocery Store on Arlington Street during the 1950's and later at Main Street News Stand during the 1970's. She also received great pleasure from sending cards to her family and friends. The family wishes to express its deepest gratitude to the staff of Brekenridge Retirement Center for their care and support of Oreole over the past 7 years. A funeral service will be conducted by Reverend Tim R. Lowry at Arlington Baptist Church on Tuesday, June 11, 2013, at 11:00 am with burial following at Pineview Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be at the church at 10:00 am prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Arlington Baptist Church, 1500 Bethlehem Road, Rocky Mount, NC 27803. May she rest in peace and rise in glory. Arrangements entrusted to Wheeler and Woodlief Funeral Home, 1130 N. Winstead Avenue, Rocky Mount NC 27804. 1. Dear Gail, I’m saddened to learn of Oreole’s passing and want you to know of my sympathy and understanding. She was a lady of the highest rank and will be greatly missed by her many friends and acquaintences. I regret being unable to be with you and the family on Tuesday, but no longer drive and have disposed of my car. ‘Haven’t been out of the Albemarle in several months. You are in my prayers today and will be in days to come. I join you now in sorrow, but also in celebration of Oreole’s beautiful life. Sincerely and with all my love, Carlyle

  2. Gail – I am so sorry to hear of Aunt Oreole’s death. My prayers are with your family. She was a good Aunt! Love to your family. Cindy and Bill Young

  3. As we make our journey through this life, death is our final battle. Whenever I am troubled, & lost in deep despair, I bundle all my troubles up & go to God in prayer. I tell him I am heartsick & lost & lonely, too, That my mind is deeply burdened & I dont know what to do But I know he loves me & I humbly ask if in his love hell calm my heart, for me& then I just keep quiet & think, only thoughts of peace & if I abide in stillness my restless murmurings cease. (Ps.3418) (John 316) Due to the ramson sacrifice of Jesus Christ, we know that we have the hope of seeing our loved ones once again. The Bible gives us hope, over & over again. Jesus said I am the resurrection, & the life. He that exercises faith in me, though he dies, will come to life again. (John 1125) Jesus also said I am the vine & my Father is the cultivator. (John 151) The Bibles tells us that there will be no more tears, no pain, or sickness & death will be no more. (Rev. 213,4) What a wonderful time, we can look forward to, seeing our loved ones once again
