Naomi Foster Cheek

ROCKY MOUNT, NC - Naomi Foster Cheek was born January 27th, 1924 in Crumpler, WVA, and died October 12th , 2012 at the age of 88. She was the beloved wife of James H. Cheek of Rocky Mount, NC. Naomi was a Light of Christ in the world - full of love and compassion. She was joyful, witty, gracious and kind. Her husband, Jim, was the light of her life. Naomi was a faithful member of the Englewood United Methodist Church in Rocky Mount and worked in community service including several years as a volunteer at Community Hospital. Before moving to Rocky Mount 30 years ago, Naomi attended the First Methodist Church in Pocahontas, VA. She worked at the Bank of Pocahontas and was active in the Womens' Club. She grew up in the Methodist Church at Maybeury, WVA. Naomi was the daughter of the late Dillard Henry Foster and Nellie Mae Dent Foster of Beckley, WVA. She is survived by her husband James H. Cheek, son Alfred R. Martin of Naperville, Illinois, daughter Suzanne Martin McLarnon of Raleigh, NC, and granddaughter Audrey M. Martin of Naperville, IL. She is survived by seven siblings: Eula Poage of Round Rock, TX; Willowdean Legg of West Chester, PA, Gaynelle D'Arco of Beckley, WVA, Rita Ann Wendell of Fullerton, TX, Brooksey Guilliams of Newark, NY, Betty Jo Fox of Irvington, AL, and Harold Foster of Ray City, GA. She is preceded in death by her brother, Henry Foster, and sister, Maybelle Beck. Naomi was also dearly loved by her daughter-in-law, Laurie Martin, son-in-law, Ross McLarnon, her sister-in-law, Sarah Miles of Pocahontas, VA as well as Jim's family: Deborah and Eddie Havens of King, NC, Jim Cheek and Mary Kelly of Richmond, VA, grandchildren Heather Havens, Jimmy Cheek, Jaclyn Hitchcock and great grandchildren Emma, Mason, Jonah and Elijah. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Englewood United Methodist Church, Rocky Mount or to Community Homecare and Hospice in Rocky Mount. The family is most thankful to Community Homecare and Hospice and to Betty Pittman for their tender, loving care and support. "Death is not the extinguishing of a light. A service to remember Naomi will be held at 11:00am Monday, October 15, 2012 at Englewood United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Rocky Mount Memorial Park.
