Nancy Ann Whichard Umphlet

December 21, 1939 ~ October 29, 2024

Born in: Pitt County, NC
Resided in: Rocky Mount, NC

ROCKY MOUNT – Nancy Ann Whichard Umphlet, age 84, went to be home with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday October 29, 2024. Born in Pitt County, NC on December 21, 1939, she was the daughter of the late Mac and Elizabeth Hicks. She was also preceded in death by her son, Johnnie Umphlet Jr.

Nancy had a deep love for her family, her church family at Edgemont Baptist, and her scrapbooking family. She would often put the needs of others before herself, always with a smile, a listening ear and a giving heart. Nancy never met a stranger and was known for her infectious laugh and ability to talk to anyone. She was a “mama’ to many, not just her given family and touched the lives of everyone who knew her. She had an active role in her children’s, grandchildren and great grandchildren’s lives, always showing up for games, school pick-ups, recitals, and important events. Nancy was the cornerstone of her large family and had a heart big enough to make everyone feel special in her presence.

Nancy also loved travel and adventure, never missing the opportunity to join her family on trips and participate in activities like whitewater rafting, jet skiing or hiking to see the Grand Canyon. She loved capturing those memories through photographs and showcasing them through her many scrapbooks. A loving and dedicated wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and dear friend to many, Nancy will be deeply missed and never forgotten.

Nancy leaves behind to cherish her memory, her husband of 67 years and love of her life, Johnnie Umphlet, Sr.; her daughters Debbie Bone (Larry Sr.) and Rena Sherrod (Terry Sr.); her daughter in law, Chris Umphlet; her grandchildren Larry Bone Jr. (Michelle), Terry Sherrod Jr., Stephanie Sherrod, Jessica Bone, Jeremy Sherrod, Emily Sherrod, Lindsey Price, Kaitlyn Umphlet, Casey Sherrod (Allison), and Cody Sherrod; and her ten precious great grandchildren, Skylar, Justin, Wallace, Logan, Aiden, Cambrie, Mason, Easton, Oakley, Johnnie, Alex, and Nathan. She is also survived by her sister, Mona Bollinger; her brother, Sammy Hicks (Patsy); and many wonderful cousins, nieces and nephews.

A Funeral Service to celebrate Nancy’s life will be held on Saturday, November 2, 2024, at 11:00 AM in the Chapel of Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 1130 N. Winstead Ave., Rocky Mount, NC 27804, with Rev. Mike Edwards officiating. Burial will follow the service at Rocky Mount Memorial Park.
