Mildred “Meme” Windley Griffin Mildred Windley Griffin, age 91, passed away peacefully surrounded by her devoted and loving family on February 14, 2013. Born in Sanford, North Carolina, June 20, 1921, she was the daughter of Henry Latham and Annie Weaver Windley. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Hazel Windley, Annie Earle Boyd, and Inez Coggin; brother, Russell Windley; as well as her husband and the father of her children, Willis Bunn Griffin Sr.; infant son, and daughter-in-law, Charlotte Fields Griffin. Mildred (Meme) lived a full and rich life where her priorities were encompassed first by a love for her Lord and her family, both immediate and extended. She thrived on serving and doing for others which gave her great fulfillment and joy. She was well known for her homemade peach, apple and sweet potato jacks. Prior to her marriage to Willis, she graduated from Parkview School of Nursing as a Registered Nurse and was employed by Parkview and Sanitarium Hospitals. In later years, she volunteered her time at Rocky Mount Pregnancy Care Center. Mildred devoted much of her life to Red Oak Baptist Church as an adult Sunday School teacher, Womens Missionary Union (WMU) President for many years and WMU Director in excess of 20 years. Currently, Red Oak Baptist Church has a womens circle named in her honor, The Mildred Griffin Group. Her Lord was her life. Mildred is survived by her four children, Bunny Griffin and wife Dale, Beth Blanchard and husband Jerry, Neil Griffin and wife Dot, and Sandra Taylor and husband Roger, all of Red Oak. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Beverly Troutman and husband Mitchell of Maple Grove Minnesota, David B. Griffin of Red Oak, Dana Griffin of Dortches, Leah B. Poplin and husband Ashley of Fuquay-Varina, Nathan Griffin and wife Heather of Red Oak, Keesha G. Wells and husband Matthew of Rocky Mount, and Ashton Fisher and husband Brent of Red Oak; and twelve great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends and relatives 2:30pm to 4:00pm Sunday, February 17, 2013 at Red Oak Baptist Church with a funeral service at 4:00pm with Rev. Rucker Burnette and Rev. Larry Bostian officiating. Burial will follow at Red Oak Cemetery. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Red Oak Baptist Church Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 260, Red Oak NC 27868.
