ROCKY MOUNT - Maynard Wooten Leonard, age 86, passed away peacefully at home with his wife by his side on Thursday, November 5, 2020. Born in Edgecombe County, NC on June 4, 1934, he was the son of the late Grover and Ola Leonard. He was also preceded in death by his sister and brother-in-law, Elaine and William Taylor.
Maynard attended Chowan University where he played center on the football team. He served two years in the US Army stationed in Germany. He retired as Assistant Resident Engineer for the NCDOT in District 2 after 41 years. He loved his work and the people he worked with, but enjoyed retirement even more. Many memories were made through the years as a Mason, Rocky Mount Jaycee, Cub Scout Leader, Little League assistant coach, and member of Arlington Baptist Church. He was a dedicated Tarheel fan - following all their basketball and football games. He loved surf fishing, touring NC lighthouses, along with trips to the Outer Banks and Williamsburg, VA. Gardening was a favorite pastime, and he always shared his veggies!
To cherish his memory are his wife of 60 years, Elizabeth Walters Leonard; and his son and family of Charlotte - Scott, Kristen, and little Oliver who lovingly called him Pop Pop. Other survivors include his nieces, Carol Taylor, Beth Critcher; and nephew; Marshall Taylor. The family was truly blessed to have by their side for the past months Dr. David Browder and caregiver, Marlowe Spann.

Our sympathies to you, Elizabeth, and the family. We have many memories of the years when we shared timed together. He lived a long and wonderful life to be remembered fondly in the years ahead.
My deepest sympathy goes to the family! Maynard was like a brother to me. Our lives took us in different directions but whenever I returned to NC to visit family Maynard always visited me. We made some great memories! He will be missed.
Dearest Elizabeth, my sincere sympathies are with you and your family during this time of sorrow. God has determined he needed Maynard with him so Maynard is now conversing with Cullen and others that have gone on ahead of him. My love to you and your family.
I worked with Maynard two summers surveying north of Rocky Mount. I think we became good friends and remember fondly having dinner at his home one evening where Elizabeth cooked butter beans flavored with country sausage. I loved them.
