Mary Brown Tharrington

ROCKY MOUNT - Mary Brown Tharrington “Sissy”, age 89, passed away on Saturday, October 29, 2016. Born in Nash County, NC on November 19, 1926, she was the daughter of the late Lonnie Brown and Dehurse Ramsey Brown. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Roy Tharrington, Jr., brother-in-law, Harry Lee Tharrington; and God-son, Ronald Barrett. Mary was graduate of Benvenue High School, class of 1945 and attended Carolina School of Commerce. She was employed for many years at Caromount Mills and Rocky Mount Mills. She attended Marvin United Methodist Church. Mary leaves behind to cherish her memory, sister, Gail Brown Williams and husband, Joe, of Rocky Mount; brother-in-law, Fred Tharrington and wife, Betty, of Nashville; nephews, Ashley Williams and wife, Tammy, and their children, Tyler and Landis, of Raleigh; mark Tharrington and wife, Darlene, of Greenville; Blake Tharrington of Elm City; Trent Tharrington of Nashville; Scott Tharrington and wife, Lisa, of Rocky Mount; Rob Tharrington and wife, Danelle, of Nashville; many cousins and good friends who will miss her very much; and her special cat, Amy Rose. Mary was a lifelong collector of antiques and enjoyed running her shop, Cedar Hills Antiques, for 16 years. She also loved old houses and she and her husband restored two 1840 homes. After her husbands death, she restored her 1908 mill house which is on the national Register of Historic Places. Mary was an avid gardener of flowers and vegetables and she especially enjoyed her extensive herb garden. Mary was an animal lover. She loved all of her many animals and was a longtime member and supporter of the Humane Society and the SPCA. Mary was a very good cook and loved cooking for her family who will miss those Tuesday night suppers. We will all miss her smile and gentle ways. A Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, November 1, 2016 at 3:00 PM in the Chapel of Wheeler and Woodlief Funeral Home Cremation Services with Pastor Patrick Sinclair officiating. Burial will follow at Rocky Mount Memorial Park. Visitation with the family will be from 2:00 PM to 2:45 PM prior to the service. The family would like to extend their gratitude to Community Home Care Hospice for their loving care of Mary.
