Marvin Ray Smith

Marvin Ray Smith, 73, passed away Tuesday, February 15, 2011. A native of Enfield, born in Halifax County, he was the eighth of ten children born to the late Nellie Chichester Smith and Sam William Smith. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy from 1956 -1960, serving on the U.S.S. Hornet. When he returned home to Enfield, he worked as a mechanic until his retirement. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Sam, Linwood and Fred Smith; and granddaughter, Jessica Green. Marvin is survived by a special friend, Thelma Viverette; daughter, Peggy Gibbs of Pantego; two granddaughters, Christy Small and Jennifer Green; and two great-grandchildren, Allisa and Devin. He is also survived by sisters, Frances Palma of Fairview, NJ, Dorothy Whitehead of Rocky Mount and Louise Faulkner and husband Lewis of Cary; brothers, Clifton Smith and wife Ruth of Enfield, Frank Smith of Greenville, and Robert Smith and wife Debbie of Red Oak; sisters-in-law, Jeanelle Smith and Janice Smith of Rocky Mount; and 15 nieces and nephews. A memorial service to remember Marvin will be held at 6:00p.m. Thursday, February 17, 2011 at Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home with Rev. Alvin Davis officiating.
