Rocky Mount – Margaret Louise “Peggy” Fulton Burton, age 81, passed away on Tuesday, October 29, 2024. Born in Wapello County, IA on November 23, 1942, she was the daughter of the late Bernard Cloyd “Bing” Fulton and Darlene Fulton Smith. She was also preceded in death by her husband, George Albert Burton, Jr., and her stepfather, Thomas Walton Smith, Sr.
Peggy graduated from State High School of Greenville, SC in 1961 and attended Winthrop College. Later, Peggy received her associate’s degree in Horticulture from Edgecombe Technical College in 1983. Throughout her life, she centered herself around her chosen field of study until her retirement following over 30 years with Boddie-Noell Enterprises Inc as a part-time Horticulturist. Peggy also pursued other areas of interest by working at The Evening Telegram, Sunset Nursey and The Book Shoppe. She was designated as a Master Gardener by the NC Cooperative Extension of Nash County and was a volunteer for the Democratic Headquarters of Rocky Mount, NC. A dedicated and loving mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and dear friend to many, Peggy will be deeply missed and never forgotten.
Peggy is survived by her daughter, Bethany Burton Tharin and husband, John, of Rocky Mount; her sons, George Albert Burton, III and wife, Mary, of Framingham, MA and John Bynum Burton and wife, Danielle, of Ansonia, CT; her grandchildren, Ellen Burton and husband, Alex, Amelia Burton, Gracie Byrd Tharin, Will Tharin, Samantha Burton, and Hailey Burton; her sisters, Debra Smith Dalton and husband, Jessie, Tina Marie Smith, and Dorothy Smith LaMance and husband, Robert; her brother, Thomas Walton Smith, Jr. and wife, Alice; and several nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
A Memorial Graveside Service to celebrate Peggy’s life will be held on Saturday, December 21, 2024, at 11:00 AM at Pineview Cemetery, 761 E Raleigh Road, Rocky Mount, NC 27801, with Rev. Les Carpenter officiating.
