Margaret Elizabeth Jackson Tolston, 89 of Elm City, died Sunday, August 15, 2010, at her home.
Margaret was born in Rocky Mount on August 21, 1920, the daughter of Robert Alexander Jackson and Juanita Inez Williams. On December 17, 1938, she married Ernest Tolston, who after 68 years of marriage preceded her in death on February 15, 2007. In service to her community, Margaret was active in the Wilson County Extension Homemakers Club, her garden club, circle meeting, church activities, gardening, and canning the vegetables she grew in her garden. She was the proud recipient and first to receive the President of the Year award from the Extension Homemakers Club in 1965 and was nominated Woman of the Year in 1967. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with family and friends and will be sadly missed by all who knew her.
Margaret is survived by two daughters, Claudia Tolston Linkous of Raleigh and Billie Ann Tolston Ray of Moncure; a granddaughter, Eugenia "Gina" Faye Dawson Boyd and her husband Bobby of Baton Rouge, LA; and two great grandchildren, Jacob Thomas and Emma Claire Boyd. She is further survived by special friends Redmon and Joanne Thorne, whom her husband taught his skills in appliance repair to; Mitch Winstead and his wife Janet, the little boy whom she had known since he was 5 years old and who almost 50 years later still cared for her; and her ever caring and helpful neighbors, Tommy and Vickie Cobb. She is further survived by numerous other family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two brothers, Robert Alexander Jr. and William Henry Jackson; a sister, Ethel Jackson Cain; and two sons-in-law, Carter Linkous and Darrell Ray.
Friends may call upon the family from 7 to 8:30 pm on Wednesday, August 18, 2010 at the funeral home. Services to celebrate her life and her legacy will be led by Reverends Laura Dunlop and Stan Gallagher-Smith at 2 pm on Thursday in the funeral home chapel. Following services, Margaret will be laid to rest next to her husband at the Pineview Cemetery in Rocky Mount.

Please accept our deepest condolences for your family’s loss.
Claudia and family, I sorry to hear of your mom’s passing. Mrs Tolston was my genealogy buddy going back to the late 70’s. I think we were related but I cant remember how. She was a real nice lady and I know you will miss her. Jeff West, Richmond VA

Margaret was a long time member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Rocky Mount and althought she had changed membership to be closer to a church in Elm City she will always be fondly remembered by her Trinity family. It was a delight to see her back at Trinity only a few months ago and it brought joy to many of our longtime members and we are deeply saddened by her passing.
