Mae Batten Crocker

Essie Mae Batten Crocker, 92 passed away Saturday, February 20, 2010. She was born in Johnston County June 20, 1917 to the late Freeman and Pollie Mae Parrish Batten. Mrs. Crocker was a retired school teacher and was a member of Micro Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Newland F. Crocker; a son, Newland Kay Crocker; sister, Hilda Gray Sasser and brothers, Wilbert, Lloyd and Floyd Batten. She leaves behind to cherish her memory, a son, Dr. Daniel Lind Crocker and wife, Brenda of Rocky Mount; daughter, Polly Love Beaver of Houston, TX; grandchildren, Sue Ellen Bennett and husband, Tom of Winston Salem, Natalie Hyler and husband, Jim of Raleigh, Newland Crocker and wife, Ashleigh of Wilmington, William Daniel Crocker and wife, George- Ann of Chapel Hill, Levis Leroy Benton of Columbia, SC, Mae Benton of Houston, TX; great grandchildren, Daniel Abrams, Thomas Bennett, Edward Bennett, Emma Blythe Crocker, Ann- Margaret Crocker; brother, Dr. Woodrow Batten of Smithfield; sisters, Elizabeth Wells of Baton Rouge, LA, Jean Cooper of Winston Salem and several nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to, Essie Mae Crocker Scholarship Fund, at NC Wesleyan College, 3400 Wesleyan Blvd. Rocky Mount, NC, 27804 or Tar River Orchestra and Chorus, P.O. Box 8255, Rocky Mount, NC 27804. A service to celebrate the life of Essie Mae Batten Crocker will be held at 11:00am Saturday, March 27, 2010 at First Presbyterian Church, 215 S. 3rd Street, Smithfield NC. Visitation with the family will be at 10:00am prior to the service. Arrangements entrusted to Wheeler and Woodlief Funeral Home, 1130 N. Winstead Avenue, Rocky Mount NC.   1. Mrs. Essie Mae was not only my 5th grade teacher at Selma High School, but was my friend….She was an inspiration to me from a very young age when we lived near her family and she continued to be as long she remained in Johnston County….She was so very kind to my family
