Madison Augustus “Gus” Taylor

May 2, 1938 ~ June 3, 2010

Madison Augustus (Gus) Taylor, son of James Madison Taylor and Ruhama Henderson Taylor was born May 2, 1938 in Andalusia, Alabama. After a lengthy courageous battle with cancer, he passed away at home on June 3, 2010. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Vivian Gupton Taylor, son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Mary Helen Taylor and grandson, John Allan Taylor, three children from a previous marriage, Terri, Jimmy, Donald and grandson, Matthew. Gus was a member of Salem Baptist Church where he served as deacon, Sunday School Superintendent, Sunday School teacher for adult men class, choir member and served on several committees. Gus joined the U.S. Navy in 1954. He retired in 1975 with 21 years of service. He returned home and settled in the Salem Community. He worked in construction with Commercial Builders of Rocky Mount. He went back to college and got a 2-year degree in Criminal Justice. He worked as a prison guard at Nash Correctional Center and later at Caladonia Prison. With building still in his blood, he incorporated Gus Taylor Builders and built several homes in the area. He was a volunteer fireman for Red Oak and Salem and served as Fire Chief for Salem Fire Department for a number of years. He was also a paramedic and volunteered with Stoney Creek. In 1990 Gus went back to Nash Community College and obtained Level III Inspection Certificates in all five building fields and became a Building Inspector. He worked in Edgecombe County, City of Washington, Franklin County and part-time in Greene County after retiring. His favorite past time was fishing and hunting and spending time with his family and especially his grandson, John Allan. Memorials may be made to Salem Baptist Church Building Fund, 4502 Swift Creek School Road, Whitakers NC 27891. The family would like to say a special thanks to Dr. Castillos, Dr. Seaman, Dr. Meredith and to all the special oncology nurses and staff on the 4th floor at Nash General Hospital and the staff at NC Medical Group where Gus received treatment. Thanks also to Community Hospice and Sandy Shelton for helping through this difficult time. Visitation with the family will be held 7-8:30p.m. Saturday, June 5, 2010 at Wheeler and Woodlief Funeral Home. A funeral service to remember Gus will be held at 2:00p.m. Sunday, June 6, 2010 at Salem Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Rocky Mount Memorial Park.   1. Jay and send our deepest condolensces. Mr. Gus was a wonderful man. He will be missed. Growing up in the community and knowing Mr. Gus and his family well is something I consider an honor. He was fighter till the end and can now peacefully rest in God’s kingdom . May God’s love and comfort carry the family through this difficult loss. All those camping trips and drinking coffee and talking about more camping.
