Luther Daniel “Dan” Ballance

October 4, 1949 ~ April 27, 2015

Dr. Luther Daniel Ballance, Jr. passed away on Monday, April 27, 2015 after a courageous struggle with chronic progressive myofascial syndrome. He was the son of the late Luther Daniel Ballance and Isabelle Suiter Ballance. He is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Nancy Wiggins Ballance; son, Wesley Daniel Ballance and wife Emily of Rocky Mount; daughter, Anna Margaret Ballance and fianc Alex Slotte from Uppsala, Sweden; and sister, Emily Mason Ballance of Raleigh, NC. Dr. Ballance attended public schools in Rocky Mount and was a 1967 graduate of Rocky Mount Senior High School. He was a member of the National Honor Society and served as secretary of the student body. In his youth, as a member of Boy Scout Troop 5, he earned the Eagle Scout award and God and Country award. He was accepted to attend UNC-Chapel Hill and as an undergraduate, he finished with Phi Beta Kappa honors along with memberships in the Alpha Epsilon Delta premed-predental honor society and Phi Gamma Delta social fraternity. College summers were spent as an athletic counselor at Camp Sea Gull sponsored by the Raleigh Y.M.C.A. "Doctor Dan" returned to his hometown and, following a year's association with Dr. Jack Mullen, he established a private practice, which was his lifelong passion, until his retirement in 2012. During his career, he had the pleasure of taking care of a wonderful patient family. He especially enjoyed the distinction of treating a North Carolina Governor, Lieutenant Governor, an Attorney General, a member of the Senate, and a member of the House of Representatives. In 1992, he formed and later partnered with his son in a local DJ company. He sang in the choir for many of his 50 years as a member of the First United Methodist Church. Over the years, he committed to civic service with the Rocky Mount Jaycees, Breakfast Optimist, Kiwanis Club, the local board of BB&T, Nash Technical Institute, the Rocky Mount Chamber of Commerce and Nash General Hospital. Involved with the youth, he coached Y.M.C.A. youth basketball for 15 years and contributed to Boy Scout Troop 5 from time to time. Professionally, he maintained membership in the American Dental Association, a Fellowship in the Academy of General Dentistry, the Tar River Dental Study Club, and the North Carolina Dental Society, serving as its Editor and Vice-president. He also volunteered in the four area charity mission clinics held in Rocky Mount, Tarboro, and Halifax Community College. In 2012, he received special recognition for his 15 years of service as the North Carolina's district and state peer review chairman. Recreationally, often with family members, he enjoyed boating, golf, CD collecting, membership in the Enfield Still Hunt Club, and dental photography. In retirement, he busied himself with ancestry research, home beer brewing, keeping the bird feeder full, and "honey-do" jobs. Deepest appreciation goes to Dr. Arnette Everett, Dr. Don Bales, nurse Susan Collier and other community health care providers for their compassionate care and expertise. Additional thanks to Whitener Capital Management, Standard Insurance, and Tom Rhodes, J.D. for their insurance and financial advice. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be offered to First United Methodist Church, 100 S. Church Street, Rocky Mount, NC 27804. Guestbook

  1. We appreciated Dr. Ballance so much. We always felt like he truly cared about his patients. He had a way of making us laugh at least once each time we saw him. He will be missed. We are praying for his family and friends and are thankful for the promise of Heaven. Love, Chris & Jennifer Shackelford He will swallow up death forever; and the Lord God will wipe away tears from all faces, Isaiah 258 ESV

  2. Thoughts and prayers are winging their way to Dan’s family through this difficult time. I graduated from RMSHS in the class of ’67 with Dan, and he was one of the nicest guys in our class. He always had a winning smile, which I last saw in December. His son was deejaying a wedding I attended, and I thoroughly enjoyed my time of visiting with Dan that evening. A true Southern gentleman with a ready smile for everyone he met. May God wrap each of Dan’s family in His loving arms, and blanket your hearts with the peace only He can provide in the coming days. Jane Bulluck Wrenn

  3. It just breaks my heart to hear that the world has lost our dear DJ Dan. I’ve known Dan since we were children at FUMC and had many riotously funny times in Sunday School & Vac. Bible School with mischievous Dan & his cohorts. Then all through school & going off to UNC with him & the gang from RM. What a great guy! It makes me smile to picture him at our last class reunion manning the DJ table and keeping everyone laughing with his jokes and high jinx. All my love and prayers to you, Nancy, as well as Wes, Anna and sister Emily. Rest in peace, my friend. Lynell Dudley Fleming, RMSHS Class of ’67

  4. Dr Ballance was my first employer as a dental hygienist , he was a so kind and helpful. God bless all of the family, prayers and thoughts will be with you in the coming days ,I’m so sorry for your loss … As well as the community …..he will be missed. Fran Vanderford Wilson

  5. We are saddened by the loss of a precious friend as well as a wonderful dentist. He cared for our dental needs for many years and was the best! Always a smile on his face and love in his heart for his patients. He will be missed. To Nancy and family Our prayers are with you and may God give you much strength in the coming days. RIP Dr B we love you. Susan Edwards Braziel

  6. I was saddened to hear of Dan’s passing. I did not know him personally, however my mother, Rosalie Williamson, had been a patient of Dan’s for several years and she thought the world of him. I met him at my niece’s wedding reception, where he was the DJ. His kindhearted spirit took my mom on the dance floor and that picture is a special memory to me. His care for others was shown by his kindness and when my other passed away in October 2011, Dan came to her visitation. May God give you comfort now and in the days ahead. Linda Williamson Ellis (Nashville, TN)

  7. Thank you to Dan & Nancy for helping shape the person that I am today. I will forever be indebted for making me part of your family and showing me such a true love for dentistry. What a brilliant man….and what a top notch, loving family!!!! Dan, you will remain in my thoughts, forever! Nancy, Wesley, Anna-Margaret….my love to you all!! And to share this memory with a smile, when I was a junior at East Carolina University, Dan made me a mixed cassette tape of beach music…this song was one that he said I would really like (and I did) and every time I hear it, I think of him and always will httpyoutu.bexVYxKRXDT2I

  8. Nancy, I am so sorry to hear about Dan. Ever since Dan left his office, it was a loss to me personally because it was like going to visit a good friend. He always made me feel welcomed and we had such wonderful conversations. This is a great loss and he will be missed greatly. May the Lord’s Grace carry you through this difficult time. My thoughts are with you and your two beautiful children. Robin Thompson Spivey

  9. Nancy and family, We are so very sorry for your loss. Our family always enjoyed going to see Dr. B as he always asked about the neighborhood. Always had a smile and a joke ready to tell. You and your family are in our thoughts and prayers. Jack and Shari Dunn, Matt and Ben

  10. Nancy..We are so sorry to hear of Dan’s passing. His smile I will forever remember and never did he come into room on appointment day without a joke. What a charactor he was. Such a great dentist. I was so comfortable with him even on my first visit so many years ago. My daughters car cut on on her one day at the WinsteadSunset stop light and he came along and stopped to help her. Once again just shows the type of man he was. Danny and I feel privileged to have called him friend. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your kids.

  11. Nancy, Wesley and Anna Margaret – Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this sad time. I will always remember Dr. Dan fondly and have wonderful memories of times spent with you all during our younger years. He leaves behind a wonderful family and I know you all will be a source of comfort and support to one another. Sincerely, Sherri and Clint Carter

  12. My prayers and sympathies are with the family at this time, and especially with you, Nancy. Dan was always so full of love and life. He added so much to the tenor section of the First United Methodist Church Choir when I was directing there. He always had a twinkle in his eye and a smile on his face. I know you will miss him greatly. I am so sorry. May you find comfort in knowing he is with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Blessings to you all. In Christ, Marcia Heirman Mervin First Presbyterian Church Fayetteville, North Carolina

  14. My friendship with Dan is one of the great gifts of my life. From bagging clubs together at the golf course, to countless hours ON the golf course, to the many visits where he not only fixed my teeth, but straightened out my soul; I will never forget you my friend. James Biggs

  15. My mother and I were saddened to hear that Dr. Dan had passed away. He’d been taking care of our family for years! He always had something up his sleeve to make you laugh! He was such a character! I know he will be missed by all! Your family is in our thoughts and prayers. Kimberly Rooks Edwards & Brenda Rooks

  16. Prayers to the family of Dr. Ballance. He was my dentist for years prior to his retirement and I just loved him and Nancy. I will always have fond memories of sharing so many Saturday lunches with Dr. B at Central Caf. He was one of a kind, and always made me feel so comfortable sitting in the dentist chair. His smile was contagious and he always had a joke to tell me. You will surely be missed in Rocky Mount Dr. B. Nancy, please know you and your children will be in my prayers as you face this sad time in your life. (Romans 828) With much love to you, Vickie Faircloth Lawson

  17. From my first moments at RMSrHighSchool in 1965 Dan was someone to count on for kindness and fun. He will always be there, bopping away in my heart. He looked after our mother for so many years and she, along with the rest of us, always felt safe in his hands. Prayers for all. and Love Mary Ann McCabe (Williams), Class of 1967, now living in London UK.

  18. I remember the first time I met Dr. Dan in high school, I remember when Wes and I tried to install my CB radio in High School and Dr. Dan kindly laughed at our follies. I remember his gentle smile, his welcoming nature, and his humor. I most recently remember Masters weekend where he thought me to play some new games that were, in true Dr. Dan fashion, always winnable by him. Love & prayers go out to the Ballance family.

  19. One of my special memories of this sweet man happened a few years back. He and Nancy, Anna Margaret and Wesley were at our house on July 4th when Thomas, Mitchell and Dustin decided to set off some fire crackers. Suddenly, the lot across the water from us at the Reservoir was on fire. Dr. Dan and the boys went over and started dipping water from the reservoir to put it out. When the fire trucks arrived, they began questioning them, wanting to know who set the fire works off. Dr. Dan immediately spoke up and said it was me. Then all the boys said it was them. Long story short….. he was taking the blame for something he didn’t do to keep the boys out of trouble. Turns out…no one was charged with a crime. Didn’t phase them much..as soon as the fire trucks left, they shot off the rest of the fire crackers. Dr. Dan was our dentist for many years until our daughter became a dentist. I have so many funny stories he told me that I could share but the Wheeler Woodlief web site would probably blow up. The last couple times I saw Dan he was in so much pain and I felt so sorry for him…..but he still had a joke. That was him, he always wanted to bring a smile or laugh to someone else. Jack made a remark last night that is so true..he said..Dr. Dan was one of the most liked and loved people in Rocky Mount. It’s comforting to know that you are in no more pain. I can visualize you in Heaven being your old self, not hurting….. and still telling your stories. Rest in Peace my dear Dan. I will love you always, think of you often and never, ever forget you. Jean Tatum – (Jack’s wife, Jan’s mom, Dustin, Tatum, Fahlon and (Anna Margaret’s) Mema.

  20. Connie and I are greatly saddened to hear of the passing of Dr. Ballance. He was a wonderful help to us for many years as a very professional dentist, but also as a kind and caring friend. We were always so glad that someone recommended him to us when we first moved to Rocky Mount in 1996. Our heartfelt sympathy and compassion are extended to Mrs. Ballance, and the whole faithful staff at the dental clinic. We will pray for God’s grace to be given to all of you. Gerry & Connie Carlson Sebring, FL

  21. One of my favorite memories was the night Dan, Nancy and Wes came out for a dinner we had with the best chef we know, Ryan. My two little nieces were in attendance too. Dan made it so fun for them. He was all but on the floor with them, playing and making them laugh. That so touched me. He made that grown up dinner so fun! Praying for Nancy, Wes and Anna Margaret and the extended family. Love to you all.

  22. Our family feels as though we have lost a very special friend, supporter, and funny man. Dr. B never failed to ask about each family member by name when he saw us in or out of the office. He remembered details of prior visits, special life events, and always made you feel as though your complaint or problem was the most important of the day. And each visit had a joke added at some point. We were so blessed to have him to care for us. We offer prayers for comfort and the very happiest memories of him for his family. And today, we listen to some of his special CDs with a smile and tears. How precious a man, husband, and father. So many people were touched by his life! Jackie and Carolyn Vick

  23. Dan was one of the first friends I made when I first moved to RM. We remained good friends and I will forever miss him. 32. Nancy, my prayers are with you, your children and family. I hope it gives you all comfort and peace to know how many lives Dan touched and how much he was loved and respected. In his practice, he, and you, took such good care of so many, including me, my children and my parents. Thank you. From first grade at Braswell School to graduation and beyond, it was a privilege to be his friend. He was the enthusiastic driving force in organizing our class reunions for the class of ’67, to bring us all back together to remember those good ole high school days through his love of music and friendship! He will forever be in our hearts. Peace be with you. Linda Boykin, Kristy, Kelly, and Bill Modlin

  33. Dr. Ballance was such a sweet man. My mom, Bette Compton, myself and my daughter went to Dr. Ballance for many years. He would always bring back a shot glass from all of his vacations. I know that she was there with open arms greeting him. I feel privileged to have had him in my life. Prayers to his family through this difficult time!

  34. Nancy, Wesley, and Anna-Margaret I am so sorry for your loss. Dan was a great man. He made sure to always put you at ease while sitting in that dental chair, not to mention if he saw you on the street. My memories of having you as a neighbor will always bring smiles. My girls all fell in love with both Wesley and Anna-Margaret. Not to mention wondering if Arian was going to leave our family and become your older daughter. You should know Dan really shaped her life, and I will always be greatful for all the good advice both you and Dan gave her. You and the children will remain in my thoughts and prayers, and if you ever need anything don’t hesitate to ask, we are here for you. God bless you, Wesley, and Anna-Margaret. Barbara Strickland

  36. I remember being in the first grade play at Braswell School with Dan,. He was the shepherd and I was the bumblebee who helped him herd his flock. He was also my very first boyfriend and his birthday is the day after mine. Though I moved away, we kept in touch through my sister, Renee Lovell, who was a patient and also a friend. I will miss him tremendously and will keep you, Nancy and your children in my thoughts and prayers. Nancy Jones Hutchinson

  37. Nancy and family, Dr Dan became my dentist when I was old enough to pay for my own dentist. I was with him for many years until his retirement. I was always afraid to go to the dentist until I met Dr Dan. He had a way about him that took all fear away from any dental work he may have to do. He never forgot to ask about my daddy and to tell me an old story about daddy. He loved his patients and he showed it. I am so sorry for your loss. Dr Ballance will be sorely missed by me and my family. My God bless you during this difficult time. Love Donna Viverette Gowen

  38. Lots of memories of Dan from first grade at Braswell School through graduation from Rocky Mount Senior High. One of the best friends anyone could have. Always smiling and joking and knew so many people. I was amazed how he kept up with so many of us all through the years. Dan has touched my life in more ways than could be imagined. My prayers and love to all of his family. Lonya Mayo Scarborough

  39. Dan was one of the best men I ever met. He attended to my dental needs. As John Taylor said, He does things to save money and teeth that most others will not do! An example of his heart and skills was a guy climbing for me with an awful tooth abscessed and like a golf ball. It was Saturday and Dan tended to him despite the fact an hour was consumed just getting sterile for a patient. The man was a working guy and no guarantee of being paid was there— but Dan didn’t care! His good deeds and caring ministry makes him a true gentleman. His physical deterioration was something none of us would ever want—BUT God heals with death in a marvelous way. We SHALL meet again in our Home Above. John Taylor and him are sharing laughs now as I struggle and age slowly toward the goal. Thanks be to God!!!!

  40. Sorry to hear about the passing of your loved one. May the comforting promises from God ease your pain during this difficult time. One of which is found at Isaiah 258. There it says He will swallow up death forever, and the Sovereign Lord Jehovah will wipe away the tears from all faces. Again, please accept my sincere condolences for your loss.

  41. post. 629am. Dr. Dan Ballance was our dentist for many years and always lit up the room when he came in. Our prayers are with his family and friends. Anne and Ken Sickinger

  42. Nancy, God bless you and your family and I pray our Heavenly Father and our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, will hold you close and sustain your broken hearts in this sad time. Dr. Dan was my dentist for years and he was the BEST, but most of all he was my DEAR FRIEND. He loved to hear and tell jokes and always had such a kind smile and way about him. If ever a man made it to Heaven and the loving arms of Jesus and the presence of Almighty God, Dr. Dan Ballance has and has the biggest mansion on the golden streets. He was so kind and compassionate to everyone. Nancy you are the sweetest, kindest, most compassionate woman I have ever met. I will always remember when Dan pulled my tooth and you stayed with me the whole time and never left the room. God bless yoy dear as well as your family! Dr. Dan will be sorely missed! Ken Sutton

  43. Dan was one of a kind. I don’t know how any one of us in the Class of 1967 will be able to go to another class reunion without seeing him there. He was a special man who always had a kind word, a smile, and usually a joke to share. He will be missed by all who knew him. Joyce Guzman Farmer

  44. So sorry for the passing of Daniel. Talked with several times about Ballance History. He will be missed. Rev. Joseph Ballance

I knew him since I was 8 years old in 1958. we both were at Braswell elementary together. he,like me,had a life long love of music. over the 29 years that he was my dentist we shared many stories about the DJ business, and we both sent each other business when we were already booked for an event. not many people have the impact on other people like Dan did. Dabney Lassiter Bonaire, Netherlands Antilles

  47. Dr Dan was my dentist for a long time. He was full of humor and insight. On one visit he noticed a chipped tooth. He asked me how I did that. I replied on a beer bottle. 50. When we lose someone to death. Remember this all though your emotions may toss & turn like a boat on a turbulent sea. The Bibles message of hope can be like an anchor that keeps you stabilized. John 316 gives us hope, of a future yet to come.

  51. When we moved to Rocky Mount in 1974 we asked around for recommendations for a good dentist. We were so blessed that the recommendation of Dan Balance led to our one and only family dentist until his retirement, serving us, our children and most of our grandchildren too. Even as little kids they liked to go see ‘Dr. Dan’. He was a careful and skilled dentist, but always took personal interest and asked about each member of our family. We are deeply saddened by his passing, but our lives are richer for having known Dan. Nancy, you are so special to us and please know that you and your family have been and will continue to be in our thoughts and prayers.

  52. I am saddened to learn of Dr. Dan’s passing. He was my dentist for 35 years. I always appreciated his sunny disposition and the tenderness of his care. Upon his retirement, I sent him a card and was thrilled to receive a note in return from him along with a CD of special music that he’d prepared. I know that he had a tremendous impact on many lives and he will truly be missed. My condolences to the family…may your special memories bring you comfort during this most difficult time. 56. When we moved to Rocky Mount in 1986 someone recommended Dr. Dan as a dentist. We were thrilled to have a family dentist all these years who had such a great sense of humor. At every visit, Dr. Dan would walk into the examining room, shake my hand, and then immediately proceed to tell a corny joke. We crossed paths in sports as his son and our son were in sports at the same time. He had a wonderful memory for his patients and would always ask about our children years after they had left Rocky Mount. Dr. Dan you will be missed. I pray that our God will get his family and former staff through this time of deep sorrow. Sincerely, Barry Jerdan

  57. Nancy and family my heart is burden. I pray for strength and a peace for your family and mine. We love Dr. Dan. We knew we could always trust and depend on him. He will be missed earthly but not from our heart. Carrie and Crystal Umstead Davis. We Love You

  60. Every time I go to Rocky Mount to visit my aunt , I think about Dan. He was still my 97 year old aunt’s dentist. I appreciate how active he was was in planning our reunions for the class of 1967. Dan was always so friendly and interested in what you had stopped say,no matter how long it had been since you had seen him. God will bless him for the life he lived and the people he touched, including me, from our days at Braswell – Rocky Mount High School to the present. Carolyn Ballentine Robinson
