Louisianna “Lou” Queen Hurdle

May 21, 1931 ~ July 12, 2019

SHARPSBURG - Louisianna "Lou" Queen Hurdle, age 88, passed away on Friday, July 12, 2019. Born in Edgecombe County, NC on May 21, 1931, she was the daughter of the late William Matthew Hurdle and Louisiana Drake Hurdle. She was also preceded in death by her three brothers, W.M., Lemuel, and Charles Hurdle. A 1949 graduate of West Edgecombe High School, Lou received her master's degree in education from East Carolina University in 1954 and was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society. Following her degree, she went on to teach in both Wilson and Edgecombe Counties for 41 years. Lou could hardly go anywhere without crossing paths of a former student. Although many of her students had gone on to retire, Lou could still remember where most of them would sit while in her classroom even after all those years. She would always find ways to push her students to do their very best and from this she formed lasting relationships with many of them. Her passion and dedication to her students was evident as in 2009 she was pleasantly surprised when some of her former students and others held a surprise birthday party which in turned became a highlight in her life. Of her many enjoyments, ornamental lady bug collection was one of her favorites along with attending class reunions and various social networking groups. Lou was an extremely dedicated lady with a heart of gold. Many times, she offered to accompany her close friends to varying appointments and visiting area nursing and retirement centers to visit the elderly. Lou leaves behind to cherish her memory, nieces, Brenda Hurdle and husband, Bruce Wayne Murray, of Sharpsburg and Linda Poole and husband, Richard, of Greenville; sisters-in-law, Peggy Hurdle of Sharpsburg, Nancy Hurdle of Rocky Mount, and Jackie Hurdle of Bailey. A Funeral Service will be held on Monday, July 15, 2019 at 3:00 PM in the Chapel of Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home & Cremation Services with Pastor Tony Russ officiating. 1. I am so saddened by this. My prayers for her family. Ms Hurdle was by far the best teacher in the world to me. if it wasn’t for her I would not be who I am today. I love you Ms Hurdle forever for all you did for me which was more than anyone will ever know. Thank you for your guidance and teaching. Heaven truly gained an exceptional angel.

  2. Miss Hurdle was one of my favorite teachers at SouthWest Edgecombe High School. She help me get my first job at the bank. She was very influential teacher and will be missed terribly.

  3. Sincere and deepest condolences to Mrs.Hurdles’ family. May God give you the strength during the loss of your loved one. Mrs. Hurdle was an amazing teacher & one of my favorites. God definitely gained a beautiful angel.

  4. She was a wonderful teacher and I learned a lot from her. She will be missed. My Prayers and thoughts for the family.

  5. Good, stern, gentle and a most caring teacher. I hated typing class because I was slow compared to many of the girls in the class, 55 wpm was about the best that I could do. And budgets, budgets, budgets, I was forever having to stay after school to finish the budgets by due dates. But later in life I realized that typing was very likely to be the most useful course I took in HS. Seeing her at funerals and class reunions just told me how much her school community meant to her and how much she cared for all those who crossed her path in life. Good person, good life, job well done.

  6. To God be the glory for the life of Lou Hurdle! Our family loved her so much and my mom often said she was the sister she never had. Mack & Louisiana’s children were very close to Lee & Molly’s children making them inseparable for life! A wonderful legacy of true family love! I am sure they are having a real reunion in heaven tonight as they celebrate being with their Savior! I loved to talk to her as she reminded me so so much of my mom, her wit, her sternness, her sweet spirit, her laughter! We will miss her! Thanks to her angel nieces that really stood by her. She treasured those girls and rightfully so! Brenda was the Best nurse she ever knew and she was proud of it! Love to her sweet family! She will be missed! Love, Betty & Dean Strickland

  7. Queenie ‘s father was brother to my Grandmother, Dora Sunmetlin. I remember many visits with my Grandmother and my Mother,Mattie Grace. Queenie was always very kind and thoufrhful. Her legacy will be the many lives she touched for good.

  8. Miss Hurdle was my typing teacher at West Edgecombe in the mid sixties. Her positive influence was largely responsible for leading me into the teaching profession.. She was a true lady and an icon in the community. Nancy Williams Ellis, Class of ‘64

  9. Miss Hurdle was a gem of a person! I was fortunate to be her student! She was responsible for me going to college and entering the field of education. Later in life, she was my coworker and I shared an office with her! But most of all she was a dear friend! So thankful she was a part of my life!

  10. I will be forever grateful for having Miss Hurdle as one of my teachers! Miss Hurdle was such a precious lady! She was truly an inspiration to all of her students and an outstanding educator. Her life was totally dedicated and focused on the education and success of her students. Oh, how wonderful this world would be if all teachers could be like Miss Hurdle! May God comfort the grieving hearts of her dear family because today she is now resting on the wings of beautiful angels.

  11. Miss Hurdle was my typing and bookkeeping teacher at West Edgecomb High School in 1956-1957. She was a great teacher and I had a lot of love and respect for her. She took a personal interest in her students and I know she did with me. Of all the teachers I have had trough the years even into College and beyond, she is at the very top of the list. A true, dedicated teacher — a great asset and example to her profession. May you, dear lady, be blessed in God’s eternal kingdom until that day comes when we all we be reunited again. Thank you for all you have meant to me through these many years.
