Louise Mathis Sawyer, 82, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Jan 12, 2010. She was born in Nash County on March 8, 1927 to William Leonard Mathis and Eula Mae Pierce Mathis. She was preceded in death by her parents as well as her husband, John Ceaton Sawyer, Jr. in 1967, a granddaughter, Catherine Rebecca Holtzman, sons-in-law James Parker Dail and Roy Lee Moore, and a brother James Leonard Mathis.
She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. In her earlier years she worked at the Rocky Mount Cotton Mill and later retired as a cashier from Kerr Drugs in 1996. After her retirement she went back to school and earned her GED and graduated at the age of 73. She was a faithful member of the Pender Street First Assembly of God Church, and then Living Faith Fellowship Church and a longtime Sunday School teacher who taught two generations of children. She loved to work on her crafts and enjoyed sharing them with others. Her greatest accomplishments were her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren whom she loved dearly.
She leaves to cherish her memory four daughters, Mary Dail Harrell (Butch); Shirley Pierce Sutton (Jim); Linda Moore; Jennifer Holtzman (Claiborne); one son, John Michael Sawyer; eight grandchildren, Wayne Harrell (Kim); Jeff Pierce; Chad Pierce; Ben Moore; Renee Moore; Aron Sawyer; Dosie Rae Sawyer; Ian Holtzman; Four great-grandchildren, Bradley Harrell; Searra Harrell; Jacob Moore; Makayla Moore (all of Rocky Mount) and one very special brother William David (Big Boy) Mathis of Victoria, VA and several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Sawyer is further identified in Proverbs 31: 25-31 which speaks of a Virtuous Woman. "Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain; but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised."
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30pm Friday, January 15, 2010 at Wheeler and Woodlief Funeral Home. A funeral service to celebrate her life will be held at 2:00pm Saturday, January 16, 2010 in the funeral home chapel. Burial will follow at Pineview Cemetery.
The family would like to thank special friends and caretakers Shirley Purkerson and Thelma Wood as well as Autumn Care of Nashville for their truly compassionate and loving respect that was given to our Mom during her last two weeks. Thank you for your extra effort in "pampering the princess" that she truly was.
Our sincere gratitude to Jean Price of Jean's Florist of Rocky Mount for many years of dedication shown through her special gifts and floral arrangements that always brought smiles and encouragement to our family.
