Leona Walker Barnes

Leona Walker Barnes, age 98, passed away Tuesday, November 27, 2012 at Kindred Healthcare. Graveside services will be conducted 11:00am Saturday, December 1, 2012 at Rocky Mount Memorial Park Mausoleum with Reverend Richard Walker officiating. Visitation at other times will be held at the home of her daughter. She was preceded in death by her mother and father, George N. Walker and Lizzie Bass Walker; her husband, Benjamin Alvin Barnes; her son, Benjamin Alvin Barnes Jr.; and son-in-law, Franklin (Pete) Winstead. She was also preceded in death by her sisters, Bertha Modlin, Sadie Bone, Cora Layton, Lucy Braziel; and brothers, Frank, Jessie and John Walker. Mrs. Barnes leaves behind to cherish her memory, daughter, Betsy B. Winstead; grandson, Timothy F. Winstead (wife Janene); great-granddaughter, Ryan Winstead; great-grandsons, Zachary and Connor Winstead; and one sister, Thelma Edwards. She is also survived by daughter-in-law, Adrienne Barnes Jolly; her daughter, Shannon and Zan and their children; and her beloved nieces and nephews. She was a faithful member and one of the oldest living members of Calvary Baptist Church, a retired employee of Abbott Labs and former employee of Caramount Mills and A. Schottland Mills.   2. As we make our way throu this journey of life, death is our final stop. We are over come with grief. Even the perfect man, Jesus Christ, Gave way to tears. So greatly grieved was he over the death of his friend, Lazarous. (John 1135) Jesus said I am the resurrection & the life. (John 1125) What a wonderful gift we have been givin, to have the hope of seeing our loved ones once again.
