Laura Ann Smith Van Scoik, 77, was welcomed home by her Lord, Jesus Christ on March 3, 2010 after a brief period of suffering with cancer. She was born July 21, 1932 in Rocky Mount, North Carolina and was the daughter of the late Edmund Smith and Clyde Jones Smith.
She was a member of Oakdale Baptist Church and a bold witness for the Lord with a special love for missions. Her unwavering faith and positive attitude helped her family and friends remain strong with her during her illness. Her service in His name and the love and laughter she shared will be greatly missed by her family and her friends who loved and knew her.
She leaves to cherish her memory, her loving and devoted husband of 54 years, Robert (Bob) Van Scoik of Rocky Mount; brother, William (Al) Smith of Rocky Mount; sisters, Catherine S. Arnold of Rocky Mount, Betty S. Brown and husband Cecil of Seagrove, NC; brother-in-law, Marvin Van Scoik and wife, Juanita; sisters-in-law, Frances Teeter, Betty Van Scoik, Carol Van Scoik Blumingburg and her husband Rick, all of Michigan, Delores Van Scoik Pater and her husband Ed of Texas, and Bobbye B. Smith of Florida; nephews, Chuck Smith of Florida, Ricky Smith, David Smith, and Robert Smith of Wilmington, NC; and nieces, Wanda Smith Curry of Florida, Debbie Daughtridge of Rocky Mount, and Bethany A. Bass of Rocky Mount.
She is preceded in death by her brother, Charles R. Smith and sister-in-law, Tysula (Tula) T. Smith.
The family will receive relatives and friends from 7:00-8:30 p.m. on Monday, March 8, 2010 at Wheeler and Woodlief Funeral Home and other times at the home, 377 Melton Road, Rocky Mount, NC.
Graveside services to honor her life will be held Tuesday, March 9, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at Pineview Cemetery, section 43, Rocky Mount, NC with the Reverend Roy Porter and Reverend Joe Price officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Gideons International, P.O. Box 1851, Rocky Mount, NC 27802 or Friends of Hospice, 2460 Curtis Ellis Drive, Rocky Mount, NC 27804.
The family wishes to express their deep gratitude and appreciation to Friends of Hospice for their loving care of her and their support given to the family and friends.
