On April 30, 2010, the Lord called home His faithful servant, Julia Williams Dupree. She was welcomed by her husband of 57 years, Charles "Frank" Dupree, Jr, who passed away January 12, 2010.
Julia was born March 7, 1931 in Duplin County NC, daughter of the late Hiram and Lola Williams. Besides her parents and loving husband, Julia was preceded in death by sisters, Janie Bowen and Laura Ross; brothers, Walter Williams, Berry Williams and Jim Williams; and daughter-in-law, Debbie Dupree.
Julia graduated from B.F. Grady High School in Duplin County where she played on the basketball team all four years. After which she graduated Parkview Nursing School in 1952. During that time, she met the love of her life and married Frank Dupree on November 15, 1952. Julia worked briefly for Park View Hospital and then continued her career as the Office Nurse for Dr. Lewis Thorp for 17 years. After leaving Dr. Thorp, she worked for the Baptist Childrens Home of NC - Kennedy Home. She served as the Campus Nurse and a House Parent. She also worked for 15 years as a nurse for Nash General Hospital on the IV team.
Julia was a longtime active member of West Edgecombe Baptist Church. She was on the Board of Deacons, a member of the church choir, a Sunday School teacher, and Youth Director. Over the years, she developed many close relationships with her church family and she will be greatly missed.
She loved growing her flowers and fruit trees, camping trips in the mountains, her teapot collection and especially making house calls to anyone in the community who needed nursing.
She leaves behind to cherish her memory, two sons, Phillip Stephen Dupree and Charles Kirby Dupree; daughter-in-law, Barbara Jones Dupree; grandchildren, Stacey Nicole Dupree and Charles Stephen Dupree; and step-grandson, Jonathan Daniel Evans and wife Kim. She is also survived by step great-granddaughters, Anna Danielle Evans and Jenna Nicole Evans; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends and relatives 5-7:00pm Sunday, May 2, 2010 at Wheeler and Woodlief Funeral Home. A funeral service to celebrate her life will be held at 11:00am Monday, May 3, 2010 at West Edgecombe Baptist Church with Rev. Harry Fowler and Rev. Harry Kahn officiating. Please accept our deepest condolences for your family’s loss.
I lived at Kennedy Home in Kinston when Julia was the nurse there. She extended loving, tender care to me on a few occasions when I was sick and in the infirmary there. I remember her as a gentle, loving woman of God who loved children. She was beautiful from the inside out. I also remember her beautiful singing voice. She and her husband, Frank, were loved so much by many at Kennedy Home. Myself and many who lived at Kennedy Home were blessed by she and Frank. On behalf of the Kennedy Home Alumni Association, I extend my heartfelt sympathy to the family at this time. You are in my prayers. Donna Weeks Duty, Kennedy Home Alumnus 1967-1974
Our thoughts and prayers are with the Dupree family in the home going of Julia. She was a kind and wonderful woman who displayed the love of God in her smile and her actions. She will truly be missed. Grady & Harriet Howell, Rocky Mount, NC
