Joseph Wilton Eatmon, age 90, passed away peacefully on January 24, 2013. Born in Nash County on September 20, 1922, he was one of 8 children of the late Joseph Ernest Eatmon and Nannie Pearson Eatmon. He was preceded in death by his wonderful wife of 63 years, Virginia Bedgood Eatmon; 4 brothers, Wade, Garlan, Rennie and Thurston Eatmon and 2 sisters, Ruby Mercer and Clarice Fisher.
Joe served his country in the United States Coast Guard during WWII, serving in San Juan, Puerto Rico as well as numerous shore stations along the East Coast of North Carolina and Virginia. After the war he used his GI Bill to get his pilot's license. He enjoyed flying for many years after that.
Throughout his life, he was active in many businesses, owning or managing many of them. Some of those were a gas station, a heating and air conditioning company, RC Cola Bottling Company, Hill Directory and Life of Virginia. Around age 50 he entered into the real estate and building business and continued in that until his death. He also served with Stony Creek Rescue Squad, reaching the level of EMT-IV.
Joe had a love of boating, fishing and camping, keeping a camper and boat in Manteo, NC, for many years. He also enjoyed dancing and could be found on the dance floor up until just a few months ago.
Family was very important to Joe. He loved his family very much and was very proud of them. He leaves behind his daughter, Sandra Price and husband Chuck of Erwin, sons Joe Eatmon and wife Patti of Marshville, and Alan Eatmon and wife Martha of Raleigh; grandchildren, Stacy Bennington and husband Andy, Brian Price and wife Monique, Scott Eatmon , Jennifer Cromwell and husband Curtis, and Wade Eatmon; great grandchildren, Jake, Alaina, Evelyn and Marshall Bennington; Hayden, Scarlett and Ruby Price; Sydney and Jonas Eatmon; and Maddox Cromwell; and a sister Thelma Bell as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Joe was a charter member of West Mount Baptist Church and was active in the church until his death. He loved his church and he loved the Lord.
Funeral service will be held Sunday, January 27, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at Wheeler and Woodlief Funeral Home in Rocky Mount, with the Rev. Tim Hogan officiating. Burial will follow at Rocky Mount Memorial Park. Visitation will be prior to the funeral service from 12:45-1:30 p.m. at Wheeler and Woodlief Funeral Home.
