John Richard Kandl

John Richard (Jack) Kandl, age 69, died at home on Tuesday, September 6, 2011, following a courageous battle with cancer. He was born June 15, 1942, in Chicago, IL, to the late John D. and Alma M. Kandl. He graduated from Fenger High School in Chicago in 1960 and received a B.S. degree in Food Science from the University of Illinois in Champaign, IL. Jack served in the U.S. Army in Korea from 1967-1969, and retired with the rank of Major from the U.S. Army, active and reserves. On July 3, 1965, he was united in marriage to Karen S. Jones in Sycamore, IL. Jack worked in the food service industry his entire life. He worked at General Foods Kool-Aid division and CFS Continental Foods in Chicago IL. In 1979, Jack and his family moved to Indianapolis, IN where Jack had a position at Burger Chef Systems, Inc. Burger Chef was bought by Hardees, and Jack was transferred to Hardee's in Rocky Mount, NC in 1989. Jack worked at Hardee's until his retirement in 1997. Soon after, he began his own business, K and L Capstone Consultants, L.L.C. an advising, consulting, and independent contractor company for the foodservice industries. He was also an independent contractor with NSF Cook and Thurber, and conducted food and product safety evaluations of food processing and packaging plants. Jack was active in his church community at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church. He was a member of the choir and of the Knight's of Columbus. Jack is survived by his wife, Karen, his daughter and her husband, Karen (Kary) and Joe Pechmann. Cullowhee, NC; his daughter and her husband, Kim and Shannon Miller, Northfield, MN; his daughter and her husband, Susan and Nate Buchta, Sartell, MN; four grandchildren, Morgan and Isabel Gugger, Sartell, MN, Becky and Anna Pechmann, Cullowhee, NC; one sister, Barbara (Lawrence) Wallman, Massillon, OH, and one brother, Donald (Laura) Kandl, Flossmoor, IL. He is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. Funeral services for John R. (Jack) Kandl will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, September 10, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, 315 Hammond Street, Rocky Mount NC. The Rev. Tim Meares, pastor, will officiate. Entombment will be at Rocky Mount Memorial Park. Relatives and friends are welcome at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with a Rosary Service at 7:30p.m. on Friday, September 09 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Our Lady of Perpetual Help School or another charity of your choice.   1. I worked with Jack at Hardee’s and never saw him without a smile on his face – just like the one in this picture. He was such a nice person and will be missed by many.

  2. I met Mr. Kandl during his stay at Bryant Aldridge Rehabilitation center. Actually I had the priviledge of taking care of him. What a pleasure and an inspiration to all who came in contact with him. My thoughts are with the family……Lesha Clark.

  5. Jack was a wonderful man!!! He touched our lives greatly. He always had good advise, huge smiles and wonderful hugs. He will be greatly missed. He and his family are in our prayers.

  6. Many prayers have been said, and will continue to be said for Jack, as the days roll by. Our time spent with Jack, in the past several months will always serve as an inspiration and as examples of courage, shown not only Jack, but by his dedicated wife ,Karen, as well.

  7. Jack was a friend and a valued associate in our mutual food consulting pursuits. I felt very comfortable calling on Jack when I had a tough question, and he was there with with good insights.   8. I started my carJim Baileer with Jack as my very first supervisor and have many fond memories of those youthful and exuberant days at the Kool Aid plant. Jack has been a good friend and a true professional over the years. We will miss him greatly
