John Henry Daniel, Jr., 89, died peacefully at his home on February 4, 2013.
Born on July 5, 1923, he was a lifelong resident of Rocky Mount. He was the son of John Henry Daniel of Halifax County and Rocky Mount and Mary Henrietta Jones Daniel of Bertie and Hertford Counties and Rocky Mount. He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and served in the United States Army during World War II. Afterwards, he returned home to continue the family business, Daniels, Inc.
He was a lifetime member of First Presbyterian Church where he served as a Deacon and an Elder. He was on the Rocky Mount Board of Directors for Peoples Bank and a Director for Home Savings and Loan/Pioneer. For over 50 years, he was on the Board of Directors of the Historic Halifax Restoration Association.
He is survived by his wife Augusta Evans Currie Daniel, their daughter Mary Frances Daniel Wilson and her husband Braxton of Raleigh, NC, and his sister Ruth Daniel Bates of Orlando, Florida.
John was preceded in death by his infant son, Stedman Currie Daniel; his sisters, Jocile Daniel Eatman, Mary Henrietta Daniel Gordon, and Harriet Cole Daniel; and his brother, William Hill Daniel.
The memorial service will be conducted by the Reverend Peter Bynum at First Presbyterian Church, Rocky Mount on Wednesday, February 6, 2013 at 2 pm. Visitation will follow the service in the Fellowship Hall.

I was saddened to learn today of John’s passing. He was a man of integrity and well liked by everyone who knew him. My mother worked for John at Daniel’s clothing store and adirmed him as did all of his employees. They were one big happy family. I will miss his friendly smile and warm personality.
