James Lester Mitchell. 89, passed away June 6, 2010. He was born May 23, 1921 in Johnson County, son of the late Ruben Ellie Mitchell and Bertha Capps Mitchell. He was also preceded in death by sisters, Esther Reages and Ruby Newsome; and brother, Rudolph Mitchell.
James served his country in the United States Army. He served as an artillery mechanic and fought battles in Rhineland, Ardennes, Central Europe and Normandy. He was Missing in Action September 2, 1945 for 5 days. He received the American Theatre Campaign Medal, the American Service Defense Medal, the EaMat Campaign Medal with 3 bronze service stars and the Good Conduct Medal. He made his career as a truck driver with over 28 years of driving for Pilot Freight Carriers.
James was a loving husband and the best Daddy in the world. He loved his grandchildren dearly. James was the "icing on the cake" for his family. He would give you the shirt off his back if you needed it.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his loving wife of 63 years, Ruby Pridgen Mitchell; two daughters, Cathie Hendricks and husband William of Rocky Mount and Sheila Whitley and husband Bruce of Pilot Mountain; son, James Eric Mitchell of Gold Rock; and brother, Chester Lee Mitchell of Nashville. James is also survived by five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A funeral service to celebrate James' life will be held at 12:00p.m. Tuesday, June 8, 2010 at Wheeler and Woodlief Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Gary Denton officiating. Visitation with the family will be one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at Rocky Mount Memorial Park.
