ENFIELD – Jacquelyn “Jackie” Pope Clarke, age 67, of Enfield, NC, died on Saturday, December 28, 2024, at ECU Medical Center after a long, hard-fought battle against cancer.

Born in Weldon, NC on November 17, 1957, the youngest of four, she was the daughter of the late James Vivian Pope and Eugenia Pope Oakley.  Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her stepfather, Samuel Watkins Oakley, brother, James Tillery Pope, and sister, Jenny Byrd Pope Hux.

Jackie graduated a year early from Weldon High School in 1974 and attended East Carolina University, where she earned a 4-year degree in Special Education.  A 38-year veteran special educator with the NC Public School System, Jackie worked with children across the disability spectrum, elementary to high school.  Within her teaching communities, neighborhood, church and beyond, Jackie was known to have a servant’s heart.  A devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend, and an inspiration to many, she will be deeply missed.

Jackie is survived by her husband of 45 years, Joseph Keith Clarke; her three sons, Stephen Christopher “Chris” Clarke (Kathryn Clarke) of Raleigh, Brandon Keith Clarke (Etaf Rum) of Rocky Mount, and Samuel Wilson “Will” Clarke (Ashley Clarke) of Rocky Mount; her eight grandchildren, Caleb (16), Evan (15), Reyann (15), Maddox (14), Isah (12), Mallory (10), Harper (10), and Chandler (7); her sister, Mary Vivian Pope; many nieces and nephews; and friends who were like family.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, January 2, 2025, at 2:00 PM at Enfield Baptist Church, 200 W. Burnette Ave., Enfield, NC 27823, with Rev. Craig Gaither and Rev. Keith Griffin officiating. Visitation with the family will be held on Wednesday, January 1, 2025, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, at Enfield Baptist Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Enfield Baptist Church.

  2. Jackie and I were friends in elementary school and beyond. We lost touch over the years but I always considered her a friend and am so sorry about her illness and death. She fought a brave battle.

  6. I have many fond teenage memories of Jackie growing up in Weldon. She was a sweet person and an inspiration to so many. Jackie will be missed greatly by family and friends.
