ROCKY MOUNT - Howard Alvin "Skip" Knox, Jr., 74, died unexpectedly but peacefully on Wednesday, January 26, 2011, with his wife and two of his children by his side.
Originally from Pittsburgh and a graduate of Pennsylvania's Mercersburg Academy, Mr. Knox moved to North Carolina at the age of 17 to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, from which he received his undergraduate ('58) and legal ('61) degrees. He practiced criminal and personal injury law in Rocky Mount from 1962 until his retirement in 2006. He served as President of the 7th Judicial and Nash Edgecombe Bar Associations in 2003 and 2006, respectively.
A well-liked and respected member of the community, Mr. Knox was a Thirty-Second Degree Freemason, a Shriner, and a member of Englewood Presbyterian Church.
Until recent years, he was an avid duck hunter, making numerous trips with friends and colleagues to the Outer Banks, Alaska, Canada, and Mexico in pursuit of the perfect shot. He was also an avid fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers and was looking forward to this year's Super Bowl.
Mr. Knox was preceded in death by his father, Howard A. Knox, Sr., and his mother, Amy Robinson Knox. He leaves behind a large loving family: his wife of 41 years, Lois Cobb Knox; his four children, Amy Knox, Howard A. Knox, III, Windee Knox Heitkamp, and Linda Knox Beck; his sister, Linda Knox Roberts; his sixteen grandchildren; his nephews, Knox Thompson and Dr. Todd Thompson; and his beloved cat, Izzy.
The family will receive visitors from 1 pm until 2 pm Saturday, January 29, 2011, in the fellowship hall of Englewood Presbyterian Church, and a service will follow in the sanctuary. A graveside service with Masonic rites will follow at Rocky Mount Memorial Park.

Please accept our deepest condolences for your family’s loss.
Although I never got meet my grandfather I can say he was a great man and a great leader with he’s attitude and great charm. I remember my father telling me before your grandpa died they were talking about me being born and saying that I was going to be a boy and that he was excited about my birth. Rest in peace grandpa I wished I got to meet you.
