ROCKY MOUNT - Hermer Lee "Bill" Stancil, age 84, passed away on Friday, March 8, 2019. Born in Nash County, NC on September 26, 1934, he was the son of the late Eddie Nathaniel Stancil and Naomi Bobbitt Stancil. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Margie Stancil Strickland; and brothers, Durrell and Roger Stancil.
A man of great faith, Bill was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church. He dedicated most of his life to sharing and teaching the Gospel as a Sunday School teacher, a ministry he was first called towards first with Sunset Avenue Baptist Church of which he was a former member and served as a Deacon, and a devoted member and teacher for St. Paul UMC, a ministry which spanned over 50 years. A true servant to all, he was also a veteran of the U. S. Air Force during the Cold War. Bill began his career with the Rocky Mount Telegram as a full-time reporter for 13 years until taking on a position with Nash General Hospital. He contributed a newspaper column for the Telegram for many years as long as he was able to write. He retired from Nash General as a Public Relations Manager, but returned during his retirement to Nash General to continue to work part time, mostly greeting people and working at the front desk. In all, Bill made many friends through his 29 years working at the hospital and built many lasting relationships. An avid outdoorsman he had a love of hunting, a sport which he not only enjoyed doing, but also teaching as a Hunter Safety Instructor for over 20 years with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission. He also loved playing a few rounds of golf with close friends and also was a talented painter. A dedicated husband, loving father and grandfather, and a close friend to many, Bill will be forever missed and never forgotten.
Bill leaves behind to cherish his memory, wife of 62 years, Elizabeth Stephens Stancil of Rocky Mount; his daughter, Jenny Joyner Cash and her husband, Wesley, of Rocky Mount; and son Fred Stancil and his wife, Diane, of Apex, NC. What a great guy Bill was. He and his family lived beside us, the Jones family on Weaver Drive. I enjoyed reading all his columns in the paper.

He was a good man.
My sincere sympathy to Bill’s family and friends. He was always pleasant as well as a kind, helpful and humorous neighbor. I affectionately referred to him as The Mayor of Weaver Drive as he was the type of person who took the time to get to know everyone in our neighborhood. May God comfort you during your time of grief, providing you with many warm & loving memories of this dear man.
My sincere condolences on the loss of Mr. Stancil. Both he and Mrs. Stancil were so kind to my Mother, Phyllis Jacobs, at St. Paul UMC. I have a feeling that Mother, my husband Mike, and so many other angels from St. Paul are looking after him and his family. Lu Jacobs Unger

I always enjoyed reading Bill’s articles in Telegram ,seeing his big smile at Nash General behind desk giving information to all that ask and so very grateful for his Military service. My prayers are for his wife and family as they go on without him. May God’s grace cover you all. In Christian Sympathy, Martha Lancaster Barnes
My buddy….I so looked forward to him coming in and the stories would begin. Punch out of work and came back one day sat and talked 20 minutes about his dogs through life. How much it hurt him when their time was over. Always tried to keep from hearing those hunting stories though. A sweet good man I will always carry in my heart. I am thankful I could call him my friend. I hope to hear all new stories when I see him again. My condolence to his precious family because he always shared them too.
What a positive thinking, life leaving, self sharing man he was. My last conversation with Bill was special. He told me how he met and married his bride. How he loved her and how she was his life. Special man….special couple.
Liz, you probably don’t remember me (Ronnie Smith) but I worked with Bill at The Telegram in the early 1970s. To me he was a great mentor and the life of the newsroom. I learned a lot from him. My wife Donna and i were at the funeral today but did not get a chance to speak to you. It was a very good service. Remember that you and your family are in our prayers.
Farewell Bill, from all your friends among the Rocky Mount Telegram staff, past and present.
My deepest condolences for the loss of your loved one. Having experienced such a loss I know the feeling of pain and helplessness that accompanies it. Something that comforted our family during such a difficult time was the promise found in the Bible. Revelation 213,4 promises that God will wipe away all tears from their eyes and death will be no more . I truly hope that these words will bring comfort to your family as it did ours.
