Harry Mitchell Barnhill

It is with deepest sadness that the family of Harry Mitchell "Barney" Barnhill mourn the passing on Friday, July 09, 2010, of a loving husband, devoted father and grandfather, and caring son and brother. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Moody Mitchell and Elizabeth Mae Barnhill of Ivanhoe, NC; his beloved sister, Ivey Barnhill Ezzell of Rocky Mount, NC; brothers, J. P. Barnhill of Tampa, FL and Calvin Barnhill of Supply, NC; and grandson Brandon McKita of Rocky Mount. He leaves to cherish his memory, his beloved wife of 61 years, Hilda Odom Barnhill; son, Robbie Barnhill and wife, Harriette; daughters, Ginger Guy and husband, Mike, and Gay McKita. He has seven grandchildren, Derek Barnhill, Amanda Barnhill, Samantha Guy, Jimmy Guy, Mitch Williams, Ricky McKita, and Bobby Malcolm. He has three great-grandchildren, Nick Williams, Josh Williams and Rebecca McKita. He also leaves two devoted sisters-in-law, Christine Odom and Linda Ward; and many nieces, nephews, and church friends. Born June 23, 1930 , Barney was a chartered member of the North Rocky Mount Church of God and served his country in the United States Navy as a Seaman on the supply ship Adria during the Korean Conflict. He retired from Consolidated Diesel Company and spent his free time building furniture for his church, friends and family. He owned and operated Barney's Newstand on Nash Street for 15 years and was known for his love of blue grass music, the Atlanta Braves, and a good joke. His family has lovingly cared for him over the past five years with his struggle with Alzheimer's. Funeral services will be held at 4:00 PM on Sunday, July 11, 2010 at the North Rocky Mount Church of God, 2413 Goldrock Road, Rocky Mount, NC 27804. The Rev. Jerome Mozingo and Rev. Harold T. Anderson will officiate. Burial will follow at Pineview Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 PM on Saturday, July 10, 2010 at the North Rocky Mount Church of God.
