Mrs. Grace Williford Daughtridge, 101, died Friday, September 28, 2012 at the Golden Living Center in Tarboro NC where she had been a resident for the past six years. Prior to her relocation to Tarboro, she resided for seventy three years at 3441 Old Wilson Road, Rocky Mount NC.
Mrs. Daughtridge was born in Wilson County, September 15, 1911. She was the wife of the late Ulyss “Doc” Daughtridge and the daughter of the late Thad and Mary Sharp Williford. She was also preceded in death by her sisters, Nanny Fleming, Nell Proctor, and Emily Elmore and her brothers, C.T. Williford, Morris Williford and Samuel Williford.
She is survived by three sons, Glenn Daughtridge and wife Patricia, Charles Daughtridge and wife Rachel, and Alvin Daughtridge and wife Judy; daughter, Mary Fond Daughtridge DeBrecht and husband Bob; eleven grandchildren; 18 great-grandchldren; two great-great-grandchildren; sister, Ruth Robinson; brother, W.C. Williford and wife Lorena; and many nieces and nephews.
Grace Daughtridge was the last living charter member of Proctors Chapel Baptist Church where she was a former Deacon and taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School for several years. She was a graduate of East Carolina Teachers College (East Carolina University). Early in her teaching career she coached girls high school basketball. As an elementary teacher in Sampson and Nash Counties, she taught over 400 students to read. She was an encourager and a life-long advocate of education.
The family will receive friends from 7:00pm - 8:30pm Sunday, September 30, 2012 at Wheeler and Woodlief Funeral Home. A service to remember Mrs. Daughtridge will be held at 11:00am Monday at Proctors Chapel Baptist Church with Rev. Walt Cooper and Rev. Billy Webb officiating. Burial will follow at Pineview Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Proctors Chapel Baptist Church Building Fund, 2917 Old Wilson Road, Rocky Mount NC 27801 or your favorite charity.
