Glendra Altman Sledge

October 19, 1936 ~ January 15, 2013

Glendra Altman Sledge, 76, passed away Tuesday, January 15, 2013. She was born in Hemingway, SC on October 19, 1936 to the late Earle Bryant and Hulah Douglas Altman. Glendra spent her life taking care of her family and spoiling those she loved. She knew no strangers. A wonderful cook, as described by many, she welcomed all in her home and her famous words were, “Have you ate?” No one left the Sledge house hungry. She was a long-time member of Oakdale Baptist Church. In earlier years, Glendra enjoyed the “settings” after the Sunday evening service. These were random gatherings with family and friends for good food, fellowship, and lots of fun. Left to cherish her memory, her husband of 57 years, James M. Sledge; son, James M. Sledge, Jr. (Matt) and wife Vickie; daughters, Deborah Sledge Robbins and husband Joseph, Susie Sledge Webb and husband Shawn; granddaughters, Sarah Robbins Floyd and husband Thomas, Hannah Jo Robbins, Lauren Nicole Sledge, and Shelby Renee Webb; grandson, Spencer Scott Webb; brother, Randall L. Altman (Butch) and wife Brenda; along with numerous nieces and nephews. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Oakdale Baptist Church, Honduras Mission Trip, 13037 US 64 Alt. West, Rocky Mount, NC 27801. The family will receive friends and relatives from 12:30-2:00pm on Friday, January 18, 2013 at Wheeler and Woodlief Funeral Home. A service to remember Glendra will follow at 2:00pm at the funeral home with Dr. Harry Fowler and Rev. Joe Price officiating. Burial will follow at Matthews Family Cemetery in Momeyer.
