Gladys Coley Kelly

Gladys Coley Kelly, age 89, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Friday, September 14, 2012. Born in Nash County on December 05, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Obie Ray Coley and Eartie Brown Coley. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 39 years, James Levan Kelly; four brothers, Earl Coley, Alvin Coley, Harold Coley and Ray Coley; three sisters, Nadine Wordsworth, Carlony Syider and infant sister, Annie Ruth Coley; and two grandchildren, Kelly Joe Ferrell and William Lee Corbett. Gladys attended Nash Edgecombe Schools and graduated from Battleboro High School in 1940. She retired from Abbott Labs and then continued working with James Holloman Food Marts for 10 years. Still eager to stay busy, she continued working at Oakdale Baptist Church where she unfortunately retired at the age of 86 when her health declined. She also attended the Salvation Army Church for many years. Gladys loved her flowers and gardening. Her greatest joy was her family and grandchildren. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister and will be missed by all who knew and loved her. She leaves behind to cherish her memory, her children, James (Jimmy) Levan Kelly Jr. and special friend Geraldine, Judy Kelly Clark and husband Bobby, Sue Kelly Lewis and husband Thurman, and Daniel (Dan) Ray Kelly and wife Brenda; sisters, Margaret Garrett, Joyce Turner, and Grace Pittman; 12 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and 8 great-great grandchildren. She will also be missed by her beloved dog, Princess. The family will receive friends and relatives from 7:00pm to 8:30pm Sunday, 16, 2012 at Wheeler and Woodlief Funeral Home. A service to remember Gladys will be held at 11:00am Monday morning in the funeral home chapel with Major Al Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Rocky Mount Memorial Park.
