George William Pennington

ROCKY MOUNT - George William Pennington, Jr., age 87, passed away Thursday, January 27, 2011. He was born in Nash County on September 6, 1923, a son of George W. Pennington, Sr. and Sarah Summerlin Pennington. George was a veteran of the United States Army and retired from CSX Railroad with 40 years of service. In addition to his parents, George was predeceased by his wife, Maxine Peacock Pennington and son Robert Eric Pennington. He leaves behind to cherish his memory, his wife of thirty years, Charlotte Murrill Pennington of the home; daughter, Denise Pennington Tyree and husband Timothy of Jamestown, NC; step-daughter, Candy Purvis Perry and husband Jim of Knightdale, NC; daughter-in-law, Deborah Pennington of Sharpsburg, NC; step-son Joseph Dixon Purvis and wife Lisa of Raleigh, NC; brother, Robert Walton Pennington of Goldsboro, NC; grandchildren, Nathan Tyree and Matthew Tyree, Wilton Pennington, Rebecca Pennington and Robert Pennington; step-grandchildren, Scott Bell and Elizabeth Bell; one great grandchild, Preston Eric Pennington. A funeral service to celebrate the life of George will be held Sunday, January 30, 2011 at 3:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Wheeler Woodlief Funeral Home with Rev. Jack Givens officiating. The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. until 2:45 p.m. prior to the service. Burial will follow at Pineview Cemetery.
